I do drive about 200 miles to work and stay somewhere closer every week. eventually will rent a house share.

my work/contract is based on Liverpool.

Not unless your employer will pay them.
Whats wrong with moving your family to Liverpool? Its a great place to live and a dammed sight cheaper than London.
Doomed I say we're all doomed.

It would certainly be comparatively unusual, but not unknown, for a potential employer to offer a relocation package. One job I applied for would cover accommodation and travel costs for a month, but that was it. Apart from staff at the highest level, to the best of my knowledge the Civil Service doesn't.

It is possible that the savings that you make (cheaper housing costs and no more weekly commuting), could mean that you could cope financially until your wife finds a job if she isn't able to get something suitable straight away.

Unless your wife is in a high paid job, with little chance of equalling it up here, moving to Merseyside or Cheshire might be a good idea. It would mean that you see your family during the week, save money on travelling and hotels/guesthouses, and save time on travelling as well.
