Had the standard letter wanting to charge me £50 for the same policy this year, phoned them up and they reduced it by £45. However, if I go online can get the same policy, same company even cheaper by about £20.

Can I cancel (let run out) my policy and rebook with the same company without it being a "grey area".

If you mean is it oK to start a new policy for less than the renewal price of your existing policy then yes, assuming they accept you

Otherwise you need to explain what "grey area" you are concerned about

I just thought it might be a grey area starting a new policy with the same company rather than renewing.

Then online you saw the policy £20 less, so -£15. They are paying you to go with them

or maybe you just missed out the word "more"
