Why do zips always (on clothes) start from the bottom and close when zipped upwards?

So gravity Helps when teaching a child how to get out of a wet raincoat.

Also, arms vary in length - better to start folded over to grab the tag st the bottom & tug upwards?

Finally, the pulling up method is so far demonstrably effective at breaking zips, getting fabric caught between teeth etc, so on my bad days I snarl it's a design feature to make you think that just Maybe the Amish Had A Point. (I like their work but disapprove their sexist period recreation of 16th century Germany - until a zip breaks & I wonder if buttons wouldn't have been better...)

Coats/zipped jumpers would be awful if you zipped them top to bottom. Trying to fiddle the two bits together right under your chin would be awkward, you couldn't do them half way up if you didn't want them all the way to your neck.

I would have thought zips on jeans would unzip a little when you sat/bent/opened your legs if the were upsidedown.

It's just a musing from my walk with the dog this morning, I had him hooked into a safety belt and with my jacket open it was OK but the two flaps of my jacket were flapping about in the breeze and with the jacket closed the bottom part was ruffled up with the safety line, I could have done with the zip opening about 8 inches from the bottom

I could have put the safety belt over my jacket but that would have meant adjusting it out so that I could get it closed.

I think they were designed for horse-riders originally, but quite useful when I'm driving my car, too.
