    Grr!

School transport rules are clear. If you are more than 3 miles from the nearest suitable school then the LA has to provide transport. A suitable school means, at the very least, the nearest one with a place. That's why you want to push back at the LA on providing a place - if the LA says go to school X then they have to provide transport to X if over 3 miles. If you are choosing a school and there are nearer schools with places then there is no obligation to provide transport.

Of course the LAs are run on tight budgets and school transport is down the list, so if they can rely on the parents they will. So often they won't even let you know they have an obligation.

Can chat about what transport they should be providing once you have the place, but in the mean time, suggesting that you know the rules and will expect transport provision if they insist that Y is the only school with a place, may encourage them to find a place at X. School numbers are not immovable at Caitlin's age. Keep pushing.

AFAIK it is fairly standard to hear appeals in September, not least because there is every chance of a child leaving over the Summer.

For balance, I'm not unsympathetic to the school. A family arrives on the door step and asks for school places. In an oversubscribed school they can't just magic places to appear.

In the next village to us they have a bus which takes the high school kids into town - there are 2 high schools.
I am sure it must be more than 3 miles.
The school bus was due to be cut,and was uproar including the intervention of the local MP
A suitable walking route had to be appoved.
Firstly it meant crossing a very busy link road just off the bypass - it has a crossing but its very fraught.
The main sticking point was the level crossing which is not gated, it has raised arms across a very wide road.
Fortunatly railtrack would not give permission for this to be part of the walking route, despite the crossing being next to a housing estate - it probably thought dozens more teenagers twice a day going over the crossing was a disaster waiting to happen
So now its stallmate and the bus will still be running up to Christmas at least, there seems no answer to this.

Slightly more generous rules for families on low income:

If you get the maximum Working Tax Credit or your children are entitled to free school meals, they’ll get free school transport if they’re:

What the Local Authority provides will depend on how many are travelling from a certain area to a particular school. It can vary from a private taxi, a bus pass, school coaches, petrol allowances....

As you have highlighted there can be arguments about a safe walking route, whether a school is the nearest suitable school, what the provision should be etc etc

Good morning all, we must have had about 2 inches of rain overnight

Thank you DM - unfortunately it is stuck at the garage now having gone in for the other work, so I am committed.

My DD had to be driven 4 miles to the nearest pick-up point for the school coach for about 3 terms, but as a few more started to go there, the coach extended its route and conveniently stopped outside our place for the remaining years she was there.

I also wonder what happens nowadays when you live close to the border between two LAs. When the 'nearest' school could well be in another authority.

I have hopefully just ordered the spare part we need for the oven. Thanks to help from one or two forums found out it was almost certainly the thermal fuse, fuse tested and definitely open circuit. Now a few days wait for that to come, install and hope that it was just an old fuse and not something major that made it go

It's funny, a few years ago I would have been relishing the idea of a new oven, but now I really do not like the idea of spending that amount of money

I've just spent an hour trying to find out why candy lives and requests aren't getting through to me I've either been booted off or something wrong, I'm hoping it's something wrong that can be sorted out.

Anyone here that gets lives from me? Have you had any today? Just checking that it's working one way at least xx
