Would you draw a state pension if you don't need it? 18th May 17 at 1:49 PM
Leading on from the thread about having to pay for our own care if we have the means to do so, I would like to ask:

Would/do you draw a state pension even if you don't/didn't need it?

I suppose the same question could be asked about Child Benefit and Winter Heating Allowance as well?

PS - I think I can add more poll options if there aren't enough.

It's a contributory benefit. I've contributed the requisite number of years (30 at the moment) so am eligible, so of course I'll claim it. Will be a good deal more than my private pension will amount to!

If I was a millionaire I wouldn't, but as an ordinary person my SRP is an essential contribution to my income now.

Dare I ask what you mean by need. We can pay the bills, energy, telephone, internet, housing, car with a little over. I use some of my SP on luxuries a concert every couple of months , a day out , dental and optical treatment but do we need them to live no. My OH saves his for emergencies ie large house repairs and if as happened last year we need to pay for private medical treatment.
The only reason we don't 'need' it is because we have our own pensions which we've saved for in the past, everything we have we've worked for , no inheritance or handouts from family.
