Help please!! 18th May 17 at 11:16 AM
    Hello all,

I remember seeing a post regarding opening competitions in a new tab but can't find it now.

It said something about websites knowing that you have clicked on a link from this site. Can anyone let me know how to click on the link and the website of the competition doesn't know where you came from?

I hope this makes sense, as you might gather I am rather rubbish in the IT department!

I am wondering if this could be the reason I haven't won anything for the whole of 2017 so far!

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help x

Hi, I just drag the link to a new tab.
Seems to work Ok & does not reveal the MSE link plus it is quick & easy.

    From THIS THREAD

    1) Clicking directly on the link does NOT hide where you came from.
    2) "Open in New Tab" (and CTRL+Click and clicking central mouse button/scroll wheel) does NOT hide where you came from.
    3) "Open in New Window" (and Shift+Click) does NOT hide where you came from.
    4) Many browsers have add-ons that can hide (or adjust) the referrer automatically for the above cases.
    5) Dragging a link to a new tab or window hides where you came from.
    5) Opening a link "incognito" hides where you came from.
    6) Right click and "copy link address" and pasting it in a new tab or window hides where you came from.

Wow... I didn't know this and now feel pretty dumb! Been comping for two months (after quite a long break) and not won anything yet...
Would you destroy something perfect in order to make it beautiful?

Aaargh! I've mostly opening in a new tab/window since I started and now I'm kicking myself thinking I might've disqualified myself from loads of comps ! Of course comping isn't all about winning but I'm still annoyed

I know to stick to incognito/copy link from now on - thanks to the OP for bringing this up or I probably would've carried on not hiding myself!

I have opened the thread mentioned by one-eye above.

I have an iPad running iOS 10.3.2 and tried the year of jeans link by both left clicking to directly open the page and right clicking and open in a new tab and in both cases there was no mse in n the URL

I also tried https://www.whatismyreferer.com from one of the posts and it came up with No referrer/hidden if I opened in new tab but with mse as the referrer if I clicked to open directly. Alsoif I googled that address and clicked on the link from google it came up with google as the referrer.

Therefore I believe I am not being tracked back to mse on my entries if I open in new tab - whether that's by design or chance I don't know. Try the what is my referrer link and see for yourself

    I use ReferrerControl for Chrome.
