    Hi,
Have dithered for a while about this diary. I've lurked on and off this page for years, but never really done anything about our debt. It's been creeping up for the last ten years and I've now come to terms with, and got help for my depression that had, I think, led to most of it.
Initially, my hubby lost his job, which started us on the path, but I wasn't working, and bored and depressed at home with three young children led to me spending, and spending, and spending.

Once I went back to work, I still wanted nice things and to be honest over the last ten years we have had amazing holidays, three or so a year. We've travelled most of Europe, and Australia and Asia, but all on credit.

So anyway, now we are sitting on a debt of 63.5k

Our eldest two go to uni in two years, and currently we don't have enough spare cash each month to pay their accommodation costs, so need this under control.

We are both working and together have a combined salary of just about 80k. We currently pay 1900/month in debt payments and the snowball calculators reckons 3 years to clear. We've cancelled all our further booked holidays and will be going camping in the summer in Dorset instead of the previously booked (and now cancelled) Tuscan villa.

This diary will hopefully keep me on track. So, hello!

Thanks, hope we will get there!
Morning! Rubbish nights sleep last night as work was a bit of a 'mare yesterday. Still -onwards and upwards!
    Today's plans:
    1. Handbag should arrive today, so the clock will start ticking for PayPal to release the funds, hopefully by Friday.
    2. Pay in a cheque from my Dad, we paid for a summer school for our middle kid and my Dad has given us half back, but as it's already paid, I'll use that money towards a Next payment. Paying in a cheque these days involves a huge palaver though, I have to pay it into the holding current account I have with the nationwide that I literally only use to clear cheques. Our own bank doesn't have a branch within 30 miles any more! Then once it's cleared at Nationwide I'll go online and transfer the moment to our proper account. For years I've been trying to persuade my Dad to do online banking, but no joy yet
    3. Shouldn't need to spend anything today. Yesterday I ended up having to pay to park at the office as the free car park was chocka when I came back from an emergency meeting, I'll get the money back in my expenses at some point, but it was cash spent so it's being counted. Hopefully today will be my third NSD of the month though.
Let's hope today is less crappy than yesterday then!

Hiya, howdy, hello! Good day today, I think. Had to fill the car up but otherwise a NSD. Have taken lunches into work every day this week so far, which makes such a big difference really.
Paid the balance for our little summer holiday today, in actual money from the account, not on plastic. Felt a real sense of achievement!
Otherwise, no payments so far for the last couple of days as pretty much all of the direct debits have gone out now for the month. Just waiting to see if we end up with any sort of surplus this month, but I'm not holding my breath as we've got a few family events and birthdays and so on.
I'm really looking forward to the credit card bills coming now though as for the first month, ever, in the last ten years or so the numbers should, slightly, have gone down as no credit card spends at all!

Busy busy day today. Was on a study day today and I've finally completed my Masters dissertation and submitted -woohoo! I've been doing it over the last two years, as well as working full time, so it's been a long slog, but at last I'm done. Huge sense of satisfaction.

And then I shampooed the carpets . It's all rock and roll here, you know.

This afternoon sold a pair of shoes on eBay for 72, so that's great. Hubby did the food shop, 75 in Lidl, but we needed to restock a few things, so a bit more than usual. Had a lovely curry for dinner tonight, and I'm now going to have a soak in the bath and maybe a cheeky glass of wine, as when I pulled the carpet cleaner out of the cupboard found two bottles of prosecco and two bottles of wine behind!

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend xx

Another busy day yesterday, did loads of housework jobs, and put some more stuff up for sale on FB. Slow though, lots of views but no nibbles yet. I do find that FB selling is very hit or miss, and there is so much tat on there that it's hard to sell decent stuff for decent money. Shall just continue to bump intermittently and see what happens. It's stuff that it's not really worth eBaying, once you consider fees and posting.
I did buy a couple of things though, a picnic table and a camping cupboard, one for a whole fiver and one for a tenner, paid for with cash though that I had from some bits I sold the other day. They were things we need for our camping collection, so didn't mind the spends, and to buy new would have been 40 and 50.
Had a great night last night, kids had friends over and we all watched Eurovision, which is a family tradition. Free fun, yaaay!
Today I'm doing more sorting out and tidying up. Hubby is off to work soon, so quiet day at home.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend, and enjoying the stray bits of sun we are getting!

You are doing so well. I started to tackle our debt after having to move 3 times in 2 years, overpay on a small loan and transferred a large CC bill to a 0% deal. The loan will be finished in August and the CC in October. I am looking forward to having extra money to put into a savings account.

Our income is made up of work and private pensions, so comes in a bit sporadically, work pension weekly, private pension various dates through the month. We do have a decent free OD with our bank account, which just now is essential, although we pay for it.

One thing I have done for years is have a separate savings account for things like Car tax and insurance, car repairs, house insurance. I transfer a regular amount by DD each month so when the time comes I have cash to pay it with; after doing a search to find the cheapest quote, of course.

Our car is 9 years old and has been very reliable, no plans to change it, in that time we have had very little to pay out, a set of new tyres,a new sensor, alternator and this month disc brakes before it goes for its MOT.

We also do the same for holidays, although we are going to change the way we holiday from now on. Taking short breaks rather than full weeks. My OH has an account for his bowls, he puts part of his pocket money each month into it for his yearly fees and usually manages to save enough to pay for a tank of fuel when we go away as well.

With only 2 of us shopping is about 120 a month, Aldi, Lidl and Morrison. I do make my own bread, OH likes Lidl extra thick wholemeal bread for toast, he hates thin toast. A loaf lasts us a week, unless we have something on toast at lunchtime.

Thanks czarina, great to see how other people budget.
We have two cars, mine is a work car, so I just have to pay for fuel. Hubby's is a small runaround, and I need to start to budget for MOT and so on fo rthat, so great reminder. We've only just bought it!

Right. Month 1 tally up can be completed as all statements are now in.
In May, we reduced our debt by......

    1264.48

Really happy as it's the first time in about ten years it's gone down instead of up.

1.99% of debt is paid off.

Well done for selling the handbag - not an easy choice but in a few years you will hopefully be in a position to get its latest equivalent

Quiet debt busting week, hideous week at work -thank goodness it's Friday! Haven't spent much this week, no exotic holidays booked and haven't bought lunch out at all, so reasonably successful!
    Plan for the weekend:
Do some work in the garden if it actually stops raining for more than a second
Sort trailer for camping weekend (free) next BH weekend
Bump all FB selling posts to try and drum up some sales as nothing for the last four days
Consider putting some stuff on Evilbay
Try and get some rest as knackered after this week's shenanigans at work

Morning all! Hope everyone has plans for a relaxing/crazy and wild/chilled weekend?
We are having a 'tidy up the house and garden' weekend. Youngest has a birthday party to go to, which is likely to involve many hours of hair and make up planning (she's 13)
We are just about going to have the right amount of month for money, but it's tight. Normally at this point I would say 'sod it' and do a huge food shop on the credit card, but we have enough in the groceries pot for a shop, no treats this week though!
I'm hoping a few bits sell on FB or EBay this weekend, as could do with a few quid as we are away on a camping trip next weekend with friends, it's free but we have to pay fuel and food of course. Drinks are free though as I've not opened any of the wine I found behind the carpet cleaner!

Well weekend has gone okay so far. Sold 20 worth on EBay and 20 worth of FB, and spent 8 on plants for garden, so I'm 32 up

Have done quite a lot of housework and sorting out, and sorted out a few more bits that are on EBay, so will see what happens. I put things on for Buy it Now, as don't find auctions make much profit these days.

Front of the house is looking nicer as scrubbed the front step and front door and potted up the planters, so it doesn't feel like we are bringing the neighbourhood down any more!

This week is busy as usual, and need to try and sort out our camping stuff for next weekend, but can't until the trailer is clear of garden stuff.

It's been a really quiet week on the money saving front. We had a couple of days away camping with friends, which was a free camping pitch, but ends up costing money for eating out and so on, so things are tight right now.
We've been paid for the month, but having done our budget there is literally no wiggle room and that's just depressing. We are snowballing extra towards the debt to try and bring the numbers down, so that doesn't help, but after all the pots (fuel, food, kids clubs, car maintenance etc) are filled we are left with nothing spare.
I know that when the debt is paid we will be left with 2k a month to play with, but it's so hard right now having zero to play with. Suspect that's why we have ended up where we are, because being on a tight budget is just SO depressing!
Anyway, will try and sell a few bits on eBay to get us some fun money, not sure what I've got to sell as had a massive clearout this month, but I'm sure there will be a few bits and bobs I can get rid of.
