Good websites for finding tradespeople 18th Apr 17 at 10:02 PM
Which websites do you find best for finding good and cheap trades persons?

A colleague showed me one which looked good last year - it had traders signed-up who gave quotes - but we've both lost its name.

    Thank you!

Seriously, if you have a local community Facebook page, ask on there for personal recommendations. Word of mouth from trusted friends and neighbours is by far the best way to find a decent tradesperson. And as previously mentioned, Good may not mean Cheap. There's a difference between a "cheap" price for a job and a "reasonable" price.

Expensive ones are not always good, either.

If it's a small job you could risk it and use a site like Rated People or Checkatrade. People you get from here may well be reluctant to give you any paperwork, and you may not even have their trading address.

Which Trusted Traders is better as traders sign up to a mediation service if anything goes wrong, and Which check things like their insurance.

What sort of job do you need to be done, and what area are you in? Folks on here may be able to recommend someone they have used.

OP it depends on what you want doing. Most trades have a governing body which has a register of it's members.

Whatever it's an absolute pain. We've embarked on doing the house/garden up and we have so many "tradesmen" who have failed to turn up, not sent quotes in, upped their estimates after given go ahead, The wild west comes to mind.

Unfortunately there is no real regulation for the construction industry and associated trades. There are some attempts at self regulation, but many traders do not belong to any scheme.

There is no absolute way to find a good trader. I had what I thought was a very good decorator who did the upstairs rooms very well. I had him back a few months later to do some downstairs work, and it was not nearly as good.

One factor to look for is whether the trader belongs to any scheme where they have signed up to an ADR, as this could help if things go wrong,
