Why were these professions not mentioned by the school career advisor. I'm pretty sure I could have excelled at Colourist of artificial fish, always enjoyed colouring. Invisible Net Maker may have been a bit of a challenge but I would have given it a go. A Turnip Shepherd might have been a bit monotonous but I reckon I could keep a bunch of turnips controlled.

'Count as female'. So trans isn't a new thing, then?
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

I'd love to know exactly what a full time emasculator does
Most of those jobs are probably lost to the ages but I've known a fair few samplers of drugs and fatuous paupers.

I remember reading about "knocker up of work people" and I don't think it includes getting your family up of a morning!

Another common explanation was "of independent means".

There is a website somewhere that has the 'strange' entries from all over the country.
I particularly liked when the "occupation" listed was fairly clearly given as an indication that they didn't agree with the whole process. Their little bit of protest.
I guess the census clerk was required to fill in exactly what they were told, so couldn't refuse to put it.
Perhaps it was rather like some of the 'religion' entries on our most recent censuses.

I have read strange things on census returns.
I could ask, what on earth is a Fish Bender?
But the explanation might be too much.
