British Gas!!!! 17th Mar 17 at 8:57 AM
    Morning all
Hoping for some advice here asap
I used the energy switching thing on here to move away from British Gas to First Utility
Unfortunately i gave the wrong final meter reading to 1st Utility
They have picked up it is wrong and i sent a corrected one 2 days ago
I have not had a final bill from BG until this morning where they state that i am £610 in debit!!!
They have stated it will be taken by DD as the final bill in the next 2 weeks
There is no way on this earth i owe that amount
What can i do to stop them taking any money until this is sorted out
I admit it was my mistake as i gave the reading as 582658 (last 2 digits in red on the meter) when it ahould have been 05826
I always take photos of the meters when i read them and still have them on my phone
Should i cancel the DD at my bank and pay only when the bill is corrected?
I am worried this will go onto my credit rating and take an age to get sorted
Any help is very much appreciated

All meter readings on switch go to an independent industry third party (the Data Collectors) for verification. The verified reading will show on your Final and Opening Bills with an 'E' against it. Things to do:

    1. Check that the two suppliers have used the same reading to open and close your accounts.

    2. Check to see how this reading differs from the reading that you should have given.

    3. If it is markedly different, then you have the right to ask the gaining supplier to raise an Agreed Readings Dispute with the old supplier. There are industry limits outwith which a dispute can be raised. For example, for gas, the difference in the actual and estimated readings must exceed 125C3Ms.

    4. You will not pay for the same energy twice.

I had a similar situation where the energy company took the wrong reading when I was due to switch. Ring both suppliers again and explain what happened its good you have proof. It happens it should be easily sorted

Thank you for the quick replies
I have contacted both companies and the higher reading has indeed been used
I have to wait until Wednesday to give a second reading to 1st Utility and then they can sort it out at their end
I have spoken to BG and have put the account/bill into dispute so that should stop any payment being taken and the advisor has said it won't be taken
As i don't trust BG to not take the payment should i cancel the DD or will taht make matters worse?

I think now they have put a dispute on the account you should be ok. With me they did not take anything did until the dispute was resolved. If you are concerned you could stop the direct debit but I would tell them you are doing so.

To be honest both sides were very helpful and could see the problem so maybe i am just over reacting a bit but i don't want to end up in a battle trying to get the money back
If they do take the money it will take me into my overdraft which i have managed to stay out of since November and really don't want that to happen
    Thanks again for the replies
    Very much appreciated

    It continues
I spoke with BG last week and they assured me everything was sorted
The next day i received a bill for £610
I emailed customer services and they said it was due to receiving the wrong final figure (already told them that!!) and that they would put it into dispute until the start of April
The next day i received a bill for £610
I again emailed customer services and they assured me that it was due to an error and apologised and again stated it has been put into dispute
Today i have received and bill for £610
I have replied asking why and also why is it so difficult to sort it out from their end, i have also told them i am cancelling the DD as i have no confidence in them
I have cancelled the DD with my bank and am awaiting a call today from 1st Utility to take my second reading
Hoping BG get themselves sorted but am not holding my breath
Anything else i can do to avoid a possible war with BG?
