The completion date is specified at exchange.

If the seller isn't ready to commit to a completion date, exchange won't happen.

Until exchange takes place either seller or buyer can walk at any time. After exchange you are legally obliged to complete on the date on the contract.

It's possible to do what you describe, but it's very unusual - unless the person at the top of the chain is buying a new build.

But if that's the case, the person at the top of the chain can probably only complete once their house is built. So they probably wouldn't agree to a 2 month limit, because their house may not be ready.

If there is no new build involved, you normally agree a completion date when contracts are exchanged.

If there's a new build in the chain it's likely to complete on notice.
Completion date must be agreed on exchange.
