Suggestions for finding a suitable holiday 8th Mar 17 at 4:41 PM
    Hi,

It's been a very long time since I've been on holiday outside the UK but I thought I would take my mum somewhere as she's keen to travel overseas all of a sudden. Now, I thought I'd be able to pick up a late deal quite easily for not much money but it doesn't seem that way. The deal sites seem to be geared towards couples/families and, while some have a little more flexibility in their search requirements, the popular ones aren't as user friendly. They also, understandably, tend to be Spain, Spain, Spain.

It might help to state what we're after. Ideally, a North European city type break for approximately 7 nights. Neither of us like the heat but Portugal can be included simply because my mum has met a number of Portuguese and 'they're a nice friendly people' and Barcelona because I quite fancy it. Looking to go in late March - so very last minute - and from a London airport (if needed - happy to go by train to France etc.). I thought £1k would easily cover that for both of us but that seems to be the bottom limit as it is two rooms - although a suite would be acceptable.

I really feel like I'm not looking in the proper way as I hear about families going to various places for under £300 for a week, all-in, and it doesn't seem to make sense that I can't match it. I'm guessing I'll have to book travel and hotels separately. Anyway, really just asking for a few suggestions, as left-field as you like, for somewhere where there is plenty to do.

Late March is the start of the Easter holidays, hence the not dirt cheap availability.

If you can return before they start you'd save.

Lisbon is a great city, cheaper than Bcn, Oporto is good too.

BA does flight+hotel deals. Btw you don't get free food n drink on short haul flights any more apart from LCY until the 'summer'

Do you mind sharing a bathroom?

I was going to suggest a cruise for a week which might come in at a bit over £1k if you were to share a cabin.
There may well be some late deals because the balance will need to have been paid by now so companies will know which are left & want to sell the cabins because the ships are sailing anyway. Ask a cruise specialist to search for you. I am thinking Fred.Olsen or Cruise & Maritime.

Cruising is not exactly cheap but it is certainly AI* with evening entertainment and a new port nearly every day.(* Food not alcho frolics!!)
Sadly no chance if you want 2 cabins- they have a big mark up.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

See if there's anything you like there...

Edit: It's not working, so you'll have to narrow the search yourself, but there are pages and pages of good options there.

Paris springs to mind as you could spend 7 days there in Museum, shops, city tours and it's getting warmer end of March

Also not too far for a first foreign holiday.
    Train or Plane.
Pity its full of French people...

Berlin is another good city you could spend 7 days in
    How old is your Mum
Berlin Wall, cold war etc...Germans are quite nice actually
    Just don't mention the War

Barcelona-Great if you're into Gaudi 7 days would be a push IMHO.

Lisbon-weekend city IMHO. So 3 days max.

    Left field

    Iceland?

    New York?

    Norway-Tromso- Northern Lights?
Spent 5 days there in Feb, cost £1k for 2 of us. DIY flights, car hire, AirBNB, food etc.
    Saw the Lights EVERY night

    Thanks for the suggestions.

@richardw I thought we might be sneaking in just under the Easter break but I suppose prices do tend to rise just before and after. Sharing a bathroom isn't a problem, but I think a bedroom might be pushing it.

@Katiehound I was considering a cruise but the places I looked were well beyond what I was looking to pay - I'll investigate your company suggestions. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with Spain but I think we both think of it as a 'hot' country and so tended to think of more northern cities. Beach holidays don't really appeal to either of us and the deal sites seem geared towards that.

@Blue264 Thanks for the link. I think that is what I assumed I would have to do - look for a single person deal and book twice. I'm sure it's easy enough to figure out but I did wonder if I would book one and then not be able to book the second (I don’t think it's like putting two items in your cart at Amazon). Some of the smaller sites seem to let you book the two rooms together.

@blindman All good suggestions. I came round to thinking that it might all have to be booked separately and I'll have to look at AirBnB. Paris, Berlin, Tromso all sound good.

If you are thinking about late March / early April even the countries we think of as hot won't be hot as such.... too early in the season. Probably more like a hot summer day here! (25 degrees if you are lucky!!)
Whereas the countries we tend to think of as temperate (in summer) could well still be chilly this time of year- thinking Norway and similar.

Just had a flyer from Ocean World Travel (early day for post!!)
Cruise and Maritime have a few offers: cheapest are all inside cabins and I am quoting 2 sharing:
26 Mar ex Tilbury Spring gardens + River Seine 6 nts from £599 pp
26 April ex Bristol - as above- destination + price
1 April ex Tilbury. Round Britain + Amsterdam 10 nts from £799pp
19 April ex Bristol Scottish Highlands + Emerald Isle 7nts from £399pp

not the right time of year but:
24 Oct ex Tilbury Mediaeval Cities +R.Seine 6 nts from £399 pp- single from £669pp

I looked at Fred.Olsen website last night and the late deal cruises had sold out....

Not really very ethical but how about going into a local Travel Agents and seeing whats on offer and then going home to search what takes your fancy. You can always call them back and try and get them to price match anything you find if you have a conscience (I have done this and ended up using the TA)

Hi, I think in your position, I'd forget a typical package holiday, and look for a flight to somewhere, then book a 2 bedroom apartment - which would probably be much better value than 2 x singles holidays.

You mention Barcelona, it's such a great city to visit, though 7 days might be quite a long time there. At the end March nowhere will be much more than "warm" and the traditional holiday resorts around the med probably not in full swing.

I also think Venice would be a good place to look, both have plenty to see and do, and opportunities for long coffee stops to soak up the atmosphere.

Or are you up for an adventure? Fly into Pisa (for Florence) - 3 days there, then train to either Rome or Venice, and fly out of there. Another poster was thinking of this trip on the forum a few weeks ago, and it would be perfect for 7 days.

So, how about looking on Ryaniar/Easy jet and Thomson flights, then places like Air b n b or Booking.com for an apartment. It's easy to put your own holiday together.

As above if you’re fairly open as to where you want to go, just browse flights find where you can cheap tickets and then look for accommodation.

I'd suggest Malta. You should be able to find an apartment. Loads to see and do. We had a week there last year (October) and got around the island with public transport very easily.

I wouldn't worry about being too hot in March.

Search for flights on skyscanner, rooms on trivago and package holidays on Travelsupermarket. But if you want seperate rooms it will cost you a fair bit more unless you go self catering but even then it will cost a fair bit
    My targets to end 2018:
    1) To get down to 12 stone @12/2018. At start 17 stone 7 lbs 21lb lost
    2) to find a purpose in life work wise and have a new challenge
Help others by &say hello to at least 1 person a day

Decide on a few places you'd like to see, then investigate the costs of flights there and tge cost of accommodation. When you've found the least expensive combo you can then book a transfer company if turning up at the airport and getting a cab doesn't work for you.

If you don't want a beach holiday, haven't got children you want a 'kids go free' deal, and are looking to book two single rooms then package holidays aren't set up for you.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
