To use Guineapigsqueaks/my own wording, "A new thread for declutterbugs in 2015 2016 2017!"

I'm going to aim to get rid of 2017 items in 2017.
There are some lovely tips on the KonMari thread here, set up by the talented greent: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=5385103

Of particular note is post 4 of where you can get rid of unwanted items:

Welcome one and all and happy decluttering!

    Thank you Saver Upper.

Your post is really helpful. I like the 15 minute rule. I am going to start with your suggestion of clearing 1 of my kitchen surfaces as they are well hidden.

Letting go of things will be a big challenge but I'm going to give it a go.

Small steps. Good luck and well done with what you have and continue to achieve

    Hi cassox and welcome,

I think saver-upper has summed it up really well, and I just want to echo that at first I found it difficult getting rid of unwanted or unneeded gifts, but Im coming to realise that if they are lying unused, forgotten or even worse have become a burden, both emotionallly and because of the amount of space they take up, then they should go. Having spoke to my loved ones they have often forgotten even gifting these things! Also by declutting I have inspired them to get rid of the things weighing them down, including gifts from me, which I see as an even greater gift.

So once the gifts are no longer wanted, whether thats ten years down the line, or the day after you received then, they have outlived their usefulness. acknowledge the love that they represent but dont feel compelled to keep them if they dont represent you or fit in with your life.

Also, before and after photos of areas/rooms/surfaces/cupboards are also very motivating to look back on when you are having a "this is going nowhere" day.
I was so motivated to get some decluttering done after the kids went to bed tonight. When I actually got around to doing anything,I didn't really know what I wanted to attack.I have lots of bags and bundles of papers hidden around the house, but I didn't want to get that involved. As it was,I had a peek through a basket of bags of papers, and set aside a few items to shred, and couple of cookbooks to donate-I will,as usual, list when they leave the house.
1732:Only noteable thing that I did find to recycle is a small bundle of recipes, some pulled from magazines a couple of years ago, others I had written out by hand over 30 years ago .And most never used.

    54-55 coat hangers - binned
56 perfume bottle emptied - recycled
57-58 freebie bags given to DS after a course - binned
59 freebie halyard given to DS after a course - binned
60 pair of shoes, both with a hole in the toe - binned
61 budgie's treat stick - unwrapped and placed in budgie's cage where said budgie is now attacking it with relish

Hello Cassox I've found that baby steps works for me too - if I looked at the whole house I'd be overwhelmed, but one shelf or one drawer is manageable (usually). I donate the good stuff to a charity shop with friendly staff; as I fill a bag I put it in my car boot and then drop it off when I'm in town. It gives me a buzz to know the stuff will be used instead of languishing in a drawer. It's still hard sometimes to let go, but it's definitely easier than when I first started.

My mostly decluttered front room needed a good tidy-up today (kids still home from holidays),so I did that.Didn't take too long to tidy, polish and vacuum).Took far too long to put covers (which I had washed over the last few days) back on sofa, but looks much better.
Then I did a bit of decluttering of a large wicker basket I have in that room.It is mostly full of boxes of paper, which I am planning to go through in a week off work later this month.
I set aside a few books to donate, and some stuff to shred. Will count them both as they leave the house.
    So,for a sum total of about 3 hours paper-sorting,am counting as 1,so 1733.

Having cleaned front room yesterday, today (Friday) I did a deep clean of the kitchen.
THEN,I started serious decluttering of the loft .I have previously done some decluttering of the loft (133 items),and for this thread,I have been counting it seperately to the main house. It honestly is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo fullllllllllllllllllllllllllllll of stufffffffffffffffffffffffffffff .It has been so full in the past, that when you pull the pull-cord to turn on the light,it has absolutely no effect-the mountain is so huge!!
One of the things I have temporarily moved from the loft is all the empty boxes that I have emptied/no longer need since decluttering.
Today (and probably the next few sessions of loft-decluttering) are probably going to be "skim throughs"-getting rid of "obvious" stuff-boxes for recycling or the tip.It will,no doubt, get harder when it comes time to sort through kids special toys and their drawings, etc.I definitely collect too much of the children's masterpieces,school-work,artwork,etc.
So,out of the loft today, after a total of just over 5 hours, from the loft,I have:-

    Recycled:
134-135:the packaging (initially unopened) for 2 Product keys for a computer.I have no idea what these are,or what they do,but they have been in my loft, untouched, for many years,so I probably don't need them
    136:Norton 360 version 5.0 Cd's and packaging.Again,I don't know what these are
137:box for an old electronic tablet
    138:unidentified child's painting
    139:empty shoe box
    140:shoe box lid,decorated by a small child
    141-142:empty plastic pots
    143:shoe box
    144-145:decorated-by-a-child toilet rolls
    146:Wii packaging
147-148:DS lite packaging. They mst be at least 10years old.Don't think the kids even know where the DSs are now
    149-151:3 boxes
152:a crushed box labelled "xxxx's things" and nicely decorated by a small child
153:partly-used "make your own Christmas card" set_some parts binned, some recycled

    Binned:
    154:broken make-up brush (kid's )
155:kid's nail polish, extremely old and manky
    156:foam letter
    157:beads

Also recycled 158,an old laptop box.

Now,this is just some of what left the loft today. Some of the above-mentioned boxes contained stuff, which was also sorted for donation/bin/keep.The donations,as usual,I will list when they leave the house.
Feels soooooooo good to be tackling the loft.I have been putting it off for absolutely years, and have actually booked off my birthday week later this month just so I can do the loft .

    Wow, what an eventful week!

I've been very busy moving things into the flat still. We were going to move in today but our phone line isn't getting connected until the 15th and our mattress isn't being delivered for another 10 days!

My partner and I are off to London for a week on the 11th and we are going to move into the flat when we come home.

I have given myself until the 20th - which is the last day of my time off work - to try and use up as many of my toiletries as I can as I seem to have forgotten just how much I had!

I have taken all sealed unused and well in date toiletries to the flat to start using when we move in. Everything else is still here for me to try and use up. I will take things to London with me if necessary just to try and use it up.

    Wish me luck!

I also wanted to say, well done donating to an angel baby charity-it is beautiful work they do,from what I have seen.

Haven't we got some long lists of stuff leaving houses today?Lots of decluttering being done around here .
For myself, the Great Loft Declutter 2017 continues.A bit slower going today (partner and OH returned from a couple of days away,so lots of time catching up.But,of course, one of the reasons I want to declutter,is so I can have more family time without constantly thinking I should be doing something else.Sometimes just being is enough.
As yesterday,I have set aside lots of stuff to donate, and will list when it leaves the house. For now, that stuff is spread all over the house, sort of negating the big tidy-up I had the previous 2 days .
So,over the day,I spent 5 hours 44 min sorting through the loft (plus 30 min "tidying up" a bit after. In actual fact, the place looks like a wreck, with the most random bits sprawled throughout.).Adding up the numbers now,it doesn't fell like I spent that long, because there was so much stoping and starting.Still,I am glad I did, even though I am still up posting at this hour!

    Out of the loft today:

    Recycled:
159:box that contained a whole dinner set .My parents-in-law gave it to us when OH and I moved in together. It is a bit posh, and very delicate,so we used it for a few years, then 4 kids came along, and Disney plates and bowls are much better for those years. So the bits we will use (bowls and plates yes, teacups and saucers not so much),were put through the dishwasher, and have started using.Discovered tonight they are not microwaveable. The arcing in the microwave was the clue
    160-162:3 shoe box lids
    163:1 shoe box
164:photo album.Had to explain to my 15yo what it was .I don't use photo albums (but am old enough to know what they are!),but was able to repurpose. The album was a foolscap-folder style (biggger size, but with clipping spine).Daughter has kept a couple of the loose album pages to put study-cards in,and the album for study notes. The spare album pages I will donate.
165:decorated Build-A-Bear Workshop box, crushed from years spent in the loft
166:wallpaper offcuts. Not actually sure if it is recyclable-will find out when binmen either collect or reject on Monday
    167:Christmas wrapping paper,again,crushed in storage

Other finds in the loft today which have been given a second life around the house (apart from the dinner set),are 2 waterproof coats, and an alarm clock.

I have spent a bit of time getting bits and pieces ready for starting back at work tomorrow, and kids back to school on Tuesday and Wednesday. But I still had some time to do a bit more looking through the loft.(Spent about an hour in the loft.)Over the last 2 days,I have bought so many empty boxes down into the house (some already empty from my decluttering efforts this year, others I have emptied in the last few years).Last night my 10- and 8-yo thought their room being full of boxes and lids was a great excuse to have a "sleepover" in a pop-up tent in our kitchen .Couldn't have that again ,with school about to start,so this aftyernoon I put the empties back into the loft, all neatly stacked, making 2 neat towers. Then I continued browsing through the loft.I have bought a few things down to sort through, but at this stage, all I have decluttered from the loft today is
168: a bundle of scrap paper .I have always used old A4 pages/mail/fliers/school note etc for writing notes.I used to tend tearing into A5 pieces and storing it to use.How a bundle of this got in the loft,I am not sure. But it is gone now.
    169:broken frame with photo

From in the house,(which I am counting as a seperate 2017 challenge),more stuff has left the house.
My 10yo had a plastic bag of "stuff" all set aside.I asked her what it was,and she said it was stuff she no longer wanted, and was giving to her best friend.I asked her if friend and friend's mum were happy for stuff to be coming into their house like this, and she said yes-the mum knows all about it,and it is fine.So of course,in the name of proper accountability on this thread,I had to check out what was leaving the house :
    1733:book of temporary tattoos
    1734-1735:2 Jacqueline Wilson books
    1736:David Walliams book
    1737-1738:2 other books
1739-1748:10 pairs of socks .I did ask if friend knew she was taking receivership of 10 pairs of used socks.Apparently so......
    1749:a dress
    1750-1755:6 hairbands,never used,which match school uniform gingham
    1756-1757:2 t-shirts
    1758:vest top
    1759:1 pair leggings
    1760:1 pair trousers
    1761:bundles notebooks and pencils
    1762:Rubiks cube
    1763:small purse
    1764:netted bath sponge
    1765-1767:3 bath bombs
    1768:lip balm
    1769:small pot of glitter
    1770:star-shaped emery board
    1771:travel bottle of Dove bodywash
