I've just signed up with sky for broadband and phone.
Is there any other service I can get from sky, such as downloading individual movies, obviously paying, without actually getting sky tv?

    No.
You certainly need to have at least a Sky Movies subscription to download Movies without charge.
You'd also need to have a basic TV subscription to download Movies from Sky Store.

Sky Go may be available to you. Ask Sky.
