    Underpayment 12th Oct 16 at 6:33 PM
Hi all am new here and hoping someone can help..
Came home today to a letter from the tax office saying that I have underpayed my tax by £1220 for years 15/16.
So I have gone through all my dockets from 10/04 I was on tax code 745l and then on 05/02 it changed to 1060l
I have a works van but it is not used for private use we have to sign a form in work for this.the tax office was notified that I do not use it in 2014 again in 2015 and again this year.on the letter from the tax office it has on there van benifit £3150 but I should not be paying this..
So my question is can anyone work out where they have got the figure £1220 from and do I have to pay it.

    Hope this all makes sense

Call HMRc to see if this is the case. If they do indedd have a P11d held for the 2015/2016 tax year then you will need to ask your employer to submitr an amended P11d. Once received HMRC will be able to re calculate the tax position for 15/16.

If no P11d is held by HMRC (i.e. none has been submitted by the employer) and this benefit has been included in the calculation in error they will remove the benefit upon your request and recalculate.

I know that I was paying for company van in 2014/15 tax year but had signed to say I was no longer using it think the problem is laying with my company not notifying hmrc..time to put my foot down can't be coming home to letters like that..
Thank you for your advice it's much appreciated

So my question is can anyone work out where they have got the figure £1220 from and do I have to pay it.

The £1220, assuming it solely relates to 2015:16, suggests you are a high earner as the tax due is roughly what a 40% payer would be due to pay on van benefit for 2015:16 (3150 x 40%).

This type of problem with p11d benefits crops up on here every now and again and dori2o is spot on. If the HMRC have received a p11d for 2015:16 from your company then the only way to sort it is for your employer to send in an updated p11d.

As a high earner HMRC might try to get the money by reducing your tax code next year so you have around 6 months to get this sorted before you will be out of pocket

For 2015:16 you normally start paying higher rate tax at just over £42000 (£10600 tax free and nearly £32000 at basic rate)

    Quick update on this..
Phoned hmrc on Saturday as I wanted to know if they could look into my tax code further as I went through my pay slips and when I signed off from using the van.so I signed off beginning of January 2015 but was kept on that code for having private use of van.following tax year (15-16) was on wrong tax code again for 44 weeks and now (16-17)tax year was again on wrong tax code for 6 weeks they are not willing to look into this have told me to contact my works for a revised p11d (as you both said) so have contacted work and they have sent ME the revised form that's not filled in do I need to do this and send it off also how do I get my tax code looked into as as far as I can see for tax year 14-15 &15-16&16-17 (so far) I have over payed on my tax or will they just write this off??
    Many thanks for your help..

Have they sent you a copy of a P11D` they have sent to the tax office to show that you did not have a van, therefore it is blank?
