Check out the old TV series: Cadfael.
Might be available on DVD or something.

Not horrors but some from my collection that feature monks:

    The name of the rose
    Ostrov
    Clockwise

If you look at the top 2 from the above on IMDB you will see the feature that shows suggestions for similar movies and from that you can get more monk themed movies

There's always the series Monk, but it's a jungle out there, so might not suit.

    You can thank me later....

There's the Odd Thomas film. Might be worth a look.

If your friend is into S&M there is a self flagellating Monk in the film 'The Da Vinci Code'

There's also some fine Monks in the Film 'The name of the Rose'

    The name of the Rose.

Or if you're into downright mental films, try Ken Russell's 'The Devils'.
"An arrogant and self-righteous Guardian reading tvv@t".

    wtf is all that about?

If your friend has a spare 3 hours and a couple of matchsticks to prop his eyes open I can recommend Into Great Silence
