Cities 2116 - looking at the future. 21st Sep 16 at 3:20 PM
Somethinhg triggered in my head to start a thread about this yesterday but acnt remember what it is now.

What do you think the City of 2116 will look like?

My local city is preston and heres a stock image from ~1916

    And a more recent one.

    http://www.foodman123.com/flagmkt.jpg

Ive also got some photos of the preston pals at the train station setting off for war.

Large parts of Preston remain unchanged, the train station, majority of the mills, churches are generally all still knocking around (some converted to housing etc) and a few new additions on the skyline the grandest probably being the beauty that is Preston bus station, once the largest bus station in Europe!

One of the biggest impacts for Preston must be the University (UCLAN) only becoming a university in 1992. This has seen a lot of new developments for student housing and the other things that go with it.

As for infrastructure, its hard to work out. A lot has been taken away (in the form of railways/trams) and im ignorant on a lot of old infastrucuture. But we know have fibre for most prestonians, a new riddiculously big storm drain built under/around the docklands. Electric, gas and water now going to most homes.

I wonder what will my kids and grandkids will see when they look across the Preston skyline?

I also wonder when we will start seeing buildings like this.

As a side question what will future cities need? A huge and obvious answer is power, food and water. Can our current cities cope with what we'll need in 100 years or will we be going all aztec and just leaving them for nature when theyve served their purpose?

ETA The cenotaph was built about 10 years after the first photo was taken to commemorate a lot of the men contained within it. The council have built a 100 year memorial in a near by village (still part of preston) http://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/04/94/80/4948039_4797f636.jpg
Personally love it would say its definaely progress from the 100 year old version. All names of those lost in the local pal batallions are inscribed into it. Viewed from the other side the cut out is backed by trees giving the impression of camouflage, not sure if its intentional or not but think the designer was genius!

If they cannot find new antibiotics to replace the one's that diseases are becoming resistant to there will be nobody around in 2116.

What a very poignant pair of pictures with the Preston Pals Brigade of 1916 replaced in the second picture by the cenotaph that no doubt has many of their names on it.

  • If you know you're bust you must declare it asap. So no firm ever says "yes we plan to go insolvent". So you never? https://t.co/w8aIKOqHzq

  • Some people misreading... it's NOT the rumours of insolvency of the Monarchy! Its Monarch airlines (again tho I've no idea of its validity)

  • Also re #monarchinsolvency rumours it's important to state Monarch are firmly denying it... https://t.co/N27MENRjY9
