Tesco Payqwik and TSB contactless cashback

Tesco Payqwik and TSB contactless cashback 21st Sep 16 at 2:26 PM
I'm new to the whole smartphone/app thing, having only got myself a (work) iPhone 5 a couple of weeks ago. So please be gentle with me if this is a stupid question.

Tesco sent me an e-mail saying that I can download an app and give it my debit card details and my clubcard number and then just use my phone to pay. And there are clubcard points on offer for the first five transactions - which would be nice to have, even though paying by phone isn't going to come naturally to me (I don't normally even carry it around with me, never mind walk round with it in my hand) and so I doubt it will save any time or be more convenient.

If I do this and give it my TSB contactless card details, will it show as a contactless payment at TSB's end so that I also get the 5% cashback?

You'll have to be patient until your employer upgrades your phone

EDIT: my response relates to Apple Pay which is not what OP asked

I suspect that the only way to find out is to call TSB and ask. I also suspect you will have a hard time finding anyone at TSB who knows! One way would be to make a small payment that way, wait a few days until it hits your account and then call TSB and ask them if it came through as a contactless payment or not.

The Tesco rewards offer is quite poor and doesn't compare with the TSB 5%.

You can guarantee that this will be another one of those Tesco ventures that is quietly shutdown like their video services, garden centers, coffee shops.

'Payqwik' is a ridiculous name, why deliberately mis-spell the service you are trying to offer? It probably took a large focus group to come up with that name, without a ounce of commonsense between the lot of them!

Not only that it's also only available in London, Edinburgh, Portsmouth (I think) and Northern Ireland.

If you have an Android phone with NFC and it runs KitKat 4.0 or higher you could download Android Pay to your smartphone if you wish?

I believe TSB now support the service meaning you could earn up 5% cashback if your nearest Tesco store has contactless payments OP.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your account conduct and credit history.

Hm. OK, so maybe I'll give it a try and buy e.g. a banana each day for five days to get the £5, and then if it's not cashbackable I've only lost 4p or whatever.

    Thanks for all the thoughts!

Or, to save travel costs, buy 5 bananas one after each other in separate transactions....

It's round the corner so I can ensure each banana is same-day* fresh at no extra cost!!!

    * Plus the months in transit from the banana field etc but let's not split hairs.

It's not a contactless purchase so it won't qualify. Worth using it 5 times for the Clubcard points anyway.

I've actually carried on using it this month as I've found it to be fast and convenient. Next month I'll revert to TSB contactless until I've maxed out the 5% again.

Also, the introduction of payqwiq doesn't seem to be impeding contactless rollout which is good.

But it's great to see more of their locations are getting contactless terminals installed; I have logged my details with them to get Android/Apple Pay accepted for £30 or higher.

Worth it whilst TSB are offering 5% cash back on qualifying contactless purchases!
