Are you getting enough? 14th Aug 16 at 8:23 PM
    Five-a-day, that is.

I have been reviewing my previously appalling eating habits over recent months, and having beaten my sugar addiction am now moving onto the next stage: to increase my vegetable consumption.

I know the 5 is a figure plucked out of the air by the great and the good of the scientific community and not an evidence-based target to aim for. However I also acknowledge I have previously relied on the over-consumption of fruit to kid myself I am being healthy so there must be a balance somewhere! So what I am now trying to do is eat at least 3:2 or 4:1 or 5:0 a day, in favour of veggies. Anyone care to join me?

    These are zee rules:

    - the higher the overall count the better, but at least try to have 2 more portions of veg than fruit, eg 6:4, or 7:5. Bear this in mind and there really won't be much room for more fruit after eating a load of vegetables!
    - potatoes, bananas and the like are not fruit and veg: they are starchy foods
    - smoothies don't count, nor do fruit juices. These are cheats!
    - I count mushrooms as a protein, but that is not a bad thing so eat freely (unless your name is Claudius and you happened to be born on 1st August 10 BC )
    - vegetable-based soups do contribute to the tally, upto a max of 3 portions (2 if smooth)
    - tropical fruits are high sugar and to be avoided. Max one portion a day unless counterbalanced with an extra serving of veg.
    - fruit and vegetable by-products, such as wine and jam don't count
    - condiments such as pickles and hummus are nice added extras but not actual vegetable portions.

Post your daily count here, but be honest with yourself!

Today I just about made 5 in total: 2 servings of vegetables in the form of spinach, leek and carrot sticks, plus an apple and 2 small nectarines making a 3:2 day.

As I say, wine and crisps don't count

Hi I would say your lunch could only be two portions at most, as a portion of veg is 80 grams

The OP made the point that they are eating a lot, even if it's not the rubbish they used to eat.

For me, the less said about yesterday the better... but it mostly involved crisps, pizza and frozen yogurt.

Today so far, breakfast was egg, avocado and tomato on potato cakes (2) and a mango and banana smoothie (3)

    • 80g iceberg lettuce (around a quarter head; ~11 cals)
    • two medium vine tomatoes or 7 cherry ones (~14 cals)
    • a two inch portion of cucumber (~13cals)
    • half a tin of lidl sweetcorn (apporx 70g drained weight so I count the 10g spring onions in to make up that portion = ~80cals)
    • a grated carrot well in excess of 80g (~40cals).
    • I also sprinkle 28g pine nuts over (~190cals) and dress it with
    • vinaigrette (~120cals)
Total for the salad = around 470, which is really handy for fast days on a 5:2 diet.

That's what I'm just about to have for lunch now, as it happens .
I walk around like everything is fine, but deep down, inside my shoe, my sock is sliding off.

was tempted to have beans on toast for supper as was very, very lazy. However, REALLY wanted broccoli. So steamed some broccoli, broad beans and sweetcorn (3) to have with left over roast BNS (4) and peppers, onion, carrot and courgette (5).

Lunch was reheated (frozen) lamb stir-fry (7)

Added to breakfast that gives me 9 veg and 1 fruit.

Salad as mentioned for lunch (5); poached fish and kale salad (2) for dinner.

    Total 7:0

I very freakishly dislocated my knee joint over three months ago (yes, my knee joint, not my kneecap ). As it is now healing away nicely I need to start back on a 5:2 diet. I have become shockingly deconditioned over the past few months, so time to get in shape for Christmas*. I went clothes shopping yesterday for an event next week, and while I'm the same size, my shape has sort of melted a bit . Not good.

*notice I'm not specifying which Christmas

Don't worry splishplash... after a bad year where I just about held it together, sept. and oct. so far have been a disaster. My knickers are tight. Need to get my act together and eat properly and go running.

Yesterday was 0:4; today 0:3.5 but in the positive side none of the fruit was particularly sweet, nor did I eat much else.

Back home now, I've got a fridge full of veg that I'll start to demolish from tomorrow.

A 4:0 today, I did raid the fridge for veg and ate no fruit for a change.

The bad news is it was all gratinated

Salad just now (5); first fast day in months and it felt good!

Helps to be working long days with short breaks.

Monday 0:3.5. Yesterday just 1:0, and even that portion of veg was unexpected

It really comes down to planning: v little of anyting was eaten on both days. No matter how much f&v I have in the fridge, if I don't plan proper meals it just doesn't get eaten. Must make more of an effort.

Second fast day for the week today. Salad just now - lettuce, tomato, cucumber, spring onion, grated carrot, sweetcorn, vinaigrette and pine nuts.

Good job I like that salad.

May have an orange later, we'll see. It will nudge me every so slightly over 500 cals to 510 .
