Extending our house without extending ourselves beyond our means 1st Apr 16 at 9:34 PM
I, like many, have been so inspired by many others diaries (crazy cat lady, Pippi, Brizzle ) to name but a few. I thought it was time to start my own. I need somewhere to chart my progress. I often post on the small things thread on DFW which keeps me on the straight and narrow but I often have other ramblings beyond that and so I thought here would be a good place.

So what is my goal? Well our first aim is to pay off the last of our debt. We've done it before but our focus was different so we slipped in to some old ways (and some other more definite life choices) meant we had some debt. In May last year I started tracking agin and in September I upped the game, making every penny to overpayment and enjoying the balance go down on my spreadsheet.

The start of 2016 saw us in a good place, although still a chunk to go, we have already cleared another 25% so far in 2016 and today I cleared one card entirely we have a plan, a budget and are sticking to it. We want to build an extension this year too, which will see our mortgage go up rather than down in the short term, but again it's all part of the master plan and our aim will then be to overpay that until it's gone

So this diary will hopefully keep me on the straight and narrow, allow me to track my progress (along with my trusty spreadsheets!!) and give me a space for my ramblings when my head is working overtime (something that happens often )

So pull up a pew, grab a or your tipple of choice you're more than welcome to join me

What a fab few days. Loads done, where to start - in no particular order:

Used stuff from stores to make muffins and waffles for breakfast guests
Made hobnobs rather then buying biscuits
Used left over cheese sauce and a bit of cauli for cauli cheese rather than throw bits away
Chosen carpet and laminate for through room downstairs
Bought bunk beds and 1 matress for them. Left DD needs new matress too but will wat until new year and use old one for now. Cash back from both sites
Ordered pillows and new duvet through click and collect so I could get cashback too - money from house piggy.
    Been for two runs
Friends came over and I made Chinese rather than order in fab tip from MSE friend about duck that went down a storm
Have re hung old curtains rather than buy new yet (plus I can now picture them better to sell )
Have taken down DD built in 'wardrobe' AKA mdf screwed to a frame over 60s wallpaper and big hole in wall. Made loads of space and allowed us to declutter a chest of drawers that was inocomplete and it's contents
Decided to buy matress only for our bed rather than a new bed, there is nothing wrong with the base (apart from being scratched by the cat) and if we get a new one he might just scratch that too.
Dried about 5 loads of washing on line in sunshine/breeze
Moved gifted sofabed into our lounge and moved out old one, found out council will collect old one for free
    Sold 6 things on fleabay

Whilst it's been busy we have achieved loads and it feels so good getting stuff out the house we don't need. Hope everyone is ok.

2 fairly decent items have sold on fleabay. Money to savings.

It was also payday have done the big money shuffle. Very happy with progress:

    EF fund @ 57%
Other savings @ 37% - after £100 spent on hotel for next year (which was anticipated part of saving )
    Other savings increased beyond plan
Picked lounge carpet - just need to confirm fitting
    Removed fitted wardrobe
Decluttered much more stuff, some sold, some ready for selling
Getting in to a habit of making cakes/biscuits rather than buying
Using freezer stuff to reduce 'stock holding' and minimise food budget spend by using what we have
Used more of CB card when I can (despite technical issues today)
DH got accepted for his own CC for first time in 15 years (just for credit score building and maximising points/rewards back and online protection)

Another good month with good progress. Happy days.

Progress... sold two more things on fleabay, all posted and money in savings, split 2 ways. Reconciled pots and decided to withdraw £50 out of girls 'group' pot as it was in excess - again moved to savings 2 ways.

    Bunk bed arrived

Washed 3 loads and almost entirely dried outside

Found a nature trail in the most random place that was free

On project use up going away at the end of the week (only for 3 days and already paid) but want to use the opportunity to run the fridge down. Leftovers for lunch today and tomorrow and tomorrow night. Much more space in the freezer too

Managed to get contactless card to work again today, nearly at my £100 spend for the month which will get me £5. Been using it for years postage at the PO

Another 3 items sold on fleabay, 2 ready to post and money already in savings. 1 more messaged to say they will pay Thursday. Will post sat.

Need to spend chunk on rental bathroom, not loads but still need to pay it. Will use savings, long term plan is to get a EF for rental as well as our main one.

Our dining room window has a massive gap in it, didn't think it was that bad last year but seems terrible tonight. I have a quote already - either need to bite the bullet or get some curtains to try and block some of it out.

DD got given some money as a treat to spend on a day out. My youngest (3) said she wanted to save it for another time in her money box. There's hope yet I'm obviously training them well. Anytime I move anything they seem to ask 'are you selling that?' There's obviously a theme.

Away from a couple of nights rest of week, unlikely to get to post. Will keep the faith

Back from a few days away. Accommodation was cheap and Pre paid and spends were very low, although I'm aware we are lucky that we were treated to food out twice. Have moved money from our small holiday piggy to cover spends.

Spent yesterday sorting the spare room, including boxing up the presents I have already bought for Christmas over the year. Am really pleased with what I have and what I have spent from present piggy. Updated my sheet as there were two presents I'd forgotten about which means 2 less to get. I've just one birthday present left to get for 2016 and 1 for January 17. Ordered 2 things online last night, used c/b.

Requested £6.33 from £co whilst there and moved latest fleabay sale to savings. Found a couple more things for fleabay whilst sorting so will list. Still low level stuff, but it's all adding up, I'm at about £160 I think in the last 2 months. Will try and find a few more that can go as a large letter rather than small parcel.

Going to make some muffins and maybe biscuits/cake, depending on how much butter I have this morning. Would also like to try and make some wraps, I have a recipe saved from a fellow MSE-er which looks good.

Have a big bag of frozen pineapple that I need to find something to do with, maybe pineapple chutney

Once spare room was sorted moved some big item s from DD room so we can start stripping it. Got some of the top layer off just by pulling it yesterday. Will try and get it done today so we can call plasterer and get him to come and look asap.

Back to work/school tomorrow so need to do uniforms/packed lunches later. Will try for a run too, trying to increase my speed to get below 30 minutes for 5k, may do some intervals

Productive weekend all round. Have been on a mission with food this month, spend to date lowest in last 18, so very pleased and used substantial space in freezer freed up for future ys items. Don't expect to spend much else apart from maybe cat food

Also need to contact carpet man and go and hunt out a specialist floor supplier on Thursday for dining room. Will contact second builder too, still on that to do list. In fact I'm off to do that now.

Committing these here really does help. Messaged builder and carpet man last night. Heard back from one of them.

Plasterer came tonight and quoted. Booked him in, no need to faff we've used him before and will again. Need to additional pennies to the pot, when don't I Ordered £10 voucher from survey this am and got £4 on pr0lific tonight, when it clears will hit payout

New duvet and pillows arrived today. Duvet has needed replacing for too long, not quite sure why I put it off so long

Quick blast of heating now for 30 mins before bed whilst doing the washing shuffle on the rads.

    Evening diary world

It's been a few days... busy here. Work crazy last week, hoping this week will be a bit quieter.
Been using up freezer bits and put a couple of odd portions of things in for lunches at work. Using stuff up has meant our food bill is less this month, which is also good news as it's easy to get out of control

Made 'fake it' he1nz tomato soup which included a pickled onion! Slightly odd ingredients but tasted great! Have a portion for lunch tomorrow.

Used a chicken breast for roast dinner as I didn't have any cooked roast meat in. Worked well and helped with the chicken overload in the freezer

I've also started knitting. I do hope it looks ok. It may take a while, I think I may have been rather ambitious for a first project, but, I'm 7 rows in and I've managed two button holes (intentionally )

Another week seems to have passed, this week has been crazy busy. Some good things on the money front:

£10 voucher received from surveys, will go towards door handle for next door
One fleabay item sold, must list some more
    £3 p1necone done and redeemed
    £8 pr0lific waiting to clear/cash out

Did a relatively big shop as DH discount was extended for a short time, shopping budget ended well for October, albeit used up lots in freezer so that's good.

Busy weekend, DDs in two performances today which will keep me occupied all day until late. Tomorrow will definitely be low key (so all in all it should be a cheap weekend)

Another 4 weeks has passed so it's pay day tomorrow time to review how we've done:

Paid £300 for some work at rental house, used cash not card
Savings continue to increase, EF at 65% and other savings at 53%
Stripped DD room and removed built in wardrobe
Plasterer booked for a months time
Man coming tomorrow to fit skirting boards - will be able to fund from 'house pot' rather than savings
Carpets picked, just need to book, will be new year
Sold a couple of things on fleabay - need to get some more listed
Received £10 voucher from surveys and several £ from others
Nearly finished Christmas shopping from budget
Debts on 0% continue to decrease as per the plan
    Account still (just) in credit
Signed up for new CC for online use only but one that gives rewards too

All in all, very pleased with that

So skirting finally done in lounge, he couldn't finish dining room as we needed a bit more, have duly ordered and he will pop back next week. Means I can now order flooring won't be done for Christmas but will be early Jan and tbh I'm not one of these people who 'needs' things done for Christmas, what difference does it make we've waited this long plus it gives us a bit more time to touch up paint and stain the skirting before flooring arrives.

Nearly at £30 on 1poll, feels so much nearer to £40 than something that starts with a 2 also got £3 on p1necone and am waiting for £6 something in PayPal from pr0lif1c and have another £5 waiting to clear. Done 3 1p0s this week too

Must list a few bits on fleabay just for a final push of declutter before Christmas. As in January we'll have a big wardrobe and hopefully 4 different chest of drawers to go on there too, which should go towards a new wardrobe. Need to get another box from loft as dd1 has had (yet another) growth spurt so has a load more clothes that need to go up in loft.

DDs at swimming so just enjoying a peaceful half hour

    How is it Thursday already

Managed a few surveys this week, including a £5 pr0lif1c one
Just logged on to withdraw £3 from paypal and there is £5.14 in there, so moved it all to savings
had a busy Sunday out in the garden as it was so lovely and mild, so did lots of tidying away for winter. Still have some more to do but definitely broke the back of it. DH did loads of cooking whilst I was outside, and I made 2 batches of filled bread roll swirls (think savoury Chelsea buns) with left overs, some have been eaten, some in freezer. Continue with big freezer use up and trying some new meals which is always good.

Last of skirting been fitted tomorrow, will need to go and get a stain/wax over the weekend - reminds me to lad up discount card from work as its 12% at BandQ until Sunday (but can be used anytime after that)

CC1 has arrived, which is our spend for reward and pay off account But we applied for one for DH too (to pay off and build his credit worthiness) and they were rubbish (understatement), chased again today only to say they still haven;t received paperwork (I know I sent it about 4 weeks ago) and that the application had expired now so he'll have to start again. Might just give it up as a bad job, not essential.

Right, must go get DD from school disco. PF

Sunday night, really - how did that happen lovely day again, were really making the most of not going out Sunday's DH did loads of cooking again whilst I sorted lots, completely emptied one chest of drawers (which can go on FB for sale) and sorted a big pile of papers/drawings and other things. Some went in recycling, rest was scored in respective 'keepsake' boxes in loft. Have huge pile of clothes to be saved for DD2 (just need to acquire plastic box with lid) then they can go in loft too

Cleaned bathroom and also window in our bedroom, had some mould and other stuff growing

Used a present from stash for a party DD went to this afternoon. Bought a huge pork joint which we roasted. Loads left, will be sliced for freezer for future 'quick' roasts. Plus 2 extra weeks of yourshire puds done and frozen whilst oven was on.

    Lovely weekend all round.
