    A Money-Mastering Maternity

    A Money-Mastering Maternity 2nd Jan 16 at 7:40 PM
    Dear internet people,

    This is my fourth diary

In short, the first went awol, the second led up to my wedding, the third led up to my son!

This, the fourth, is the next chapter - maternity leave!

I have taken some time off the boards since having dear son, what with it being Christmas and all. I still budgeted for Christmas though and made sure everything was paid that needed to be paid. I also had a little money for the little man and for Christmas, so to anyone who read my previous diary, you may notice my signature has somewhat changed. This is good. But I will not hang my money saving hat on money gifted. This is my brand new starting point. What has been saved in the past has passed and it's all about moving forward!

I now have 8 months of maternity leave left (I'm not taking a full year unfortunately, statutory maternity pay only pays 9 months) and I am down to the meagre (but very much appreciated) statutory pay of 139.58 per week.

My biggest challenge is therefore making this stretch to pay off debt, let alone living as usual!

That's my intro. I am off now to work out what target to set myself for the next 8 months....

Oh, and in case you're interested my last diary is here:

So with some time on my hands I have started stretching my budget through return to work and I think I should be able to pay off the 0% ending in October and also the next 0% to end in March, then another in May. At that point, with three 0%'s still to go, I will fail. Two of them will need to be transferred. The third I may be able to pay off in time. That means 2 of them will follow me into 2018. BUT I did not appreciate how much more I would have to throw at debt when back at work so paying off the next 3 I am very pleased with. They are all very close so we will have to concentrate on them, but that's a good incentive in itself.

I have used 200 I had set aside for something that is no longer needed to pay down credit card #2. I have done this rather than put it to the impending 0% end because it has been sat not reducing for a fair few months now. I feel better for it and that 200 now won't be missed. Positivity makes the biggest difference though!

Haha! And as quickly as that the extra 200 has become an extra 100! Bad maths! Hopefully once the dust settles I can get the missing 100 back

Maaaaaan. So after all my positivity, turns out I forgot 2 birthdays. So that's more off the extra savings. Darn. That won't happen again, I can tell you!

Payday. Pennies off debt. Pennies budgeted. Holiday in July, woo! So not a great month for paying things off but hey ho.

Still both working on vouchers. Soon shall have another 20 to add to the car seat fund. Hopefully even more by the end of July.

Then it will be back to work, about which maybe I should be upset or something but I'm not, I'm looking forward to DS getting to enjoy nursery. I really think he will love it. And I'm looking forward to having more coffers coming in again. I am going to be so focused now on getting this debt down. We want another baby and it is therefore the ultimate incentive. We can't do it until we are significantly better off debt wise. Maybe I won't wait until every penny is cleared, we're not getting any younger after all. But we will wait until we have a significant chunk paid off and therefore significantly better cash flow. Let's do this!

20 more in the car seat fund and well on my way to more.

And a (just above) minimum payment made. Debt stands at 16,695. If it is still at that at the end of the month I will be thrilled. We have around 150 spending left for the month after a full sainsberries shop and a full tank of petrol. That sounds okay except we do have a cheapo weeks holiday at the end of the month. I'm just hopeful we won't have to spend much whilst there but there are always little things that add up like lunches when travelling etc.

Hello MSE. I am skulking quietly in after a whopping 3 months since my last post.

Life has been hard. Everything has changed once more, and if I am brutally honest, I haven't wanted to deal with looking MSE in the eye as things have not been going well money saving wise.

But I am back. My signature is up to date. I am well into work again after maternity leave ended so long ago, and therefore earning to enable saving again!

I am on it. The end of the summer and all its distractions, events and invitations marks the start of cosy and cheap nights in. Hubby is also now on board with the saving targets. Speaking of which, I am breaking it all down. All our debt is on 0%. But there are a few different deals on each card. So I target each one individually, one by one, according to which is coming to an end first. As signature so kindly now points out, 2500 sitting on my credit card #1 comes to an end in a mere 5 months. That requires a 500 per month saving on top of the minimum payments. It is doable if we set our mind to it and don't go crazy on anything. Like the big C word that seems to be fast approaching. And LB's FIRST BIRTHDAY! Can't believe that's so close already. Life is crazy.

So. In true form, I should pronounce this diary closed as I am well into a new chapter of life. No more maternity leave moneysaving. Now it's all about juggling life and saving!

I will do this. Once and for all. The end may not be in sight yet, but each smaller end is, and the first one is dated 31st March 2017!
