On a lighter note, my vegetable delivery people put newscards about their suppliers in with the orders, and this week I got one about their apples.

This supplier has a very old orchard, with nests of wild honey bees and bumblebees in them, ideal for the pollination.

They also have some 'tame' honey bees in managed hives. (I believe that these bees originally came from the continent).

    The newscard says that

"The bumblebees and wild honey bees are as important to the crop pollination as the cultivated bees. The bumble bees and wild honey bees tend to forage at lower temperatures and higher wind speeds. So, if you get blossom on a day that it's not particularly nice to be outside, i.e. cold and windy, you'll still get some pollination carried out by the wild bees, wearas the others just sit in their hives and sort of wrap their wings round themselves and shiver".

I did laugh at the thought of all these 'tame' wimpish bees sitting around indoors, shivering!
Perhaps they are humming "ooh, it's right parky out there. Catch me going out on a day like this? Not likely!" shiver shiver

While the intrepid wild bees are beavering about buzzing from blossom to blossom, with their striped jerseys on, laughing at their feeble european counterparts!
