"I’ve met so many who have lost so much. But they never lose
their dreams for their children or their desire to better our world.
They ask for little in return – only our support in their time of
    greatest need" — UN Secretary-General, Ant!nio Guterres

In a world where violence forces thousands of families to flee for
their lives each day, the time is now to show that the global public
    stands with refugees.

To do this, the UN Refugee Agency launched the #WithRefugees
petition in June 2016 to send a message to governments that they
must work together and do their fair share for refugees.

On World Refugee Day, held every year on June 20th, we
commemorate the strength, courage and perseverance of millions
of refugees. This year, World Refugee Day also marks a key
moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee.

    About international Music Day

Music Day is a connected set of free public events which takes
place each year on the 21st June, our midsummer. Each year there
are events in over 120 countries and 700 cities around the world,
not including France where there were too many events to count!

Check out some photos from last years events around the globe.

The event is also known as Fête de la Musique
(www.fetedelamusique.culture.fr) (or Make Music Day and
sometimes as World Music Day) and originated in France in 1982.
Since then the idea has spread across the globe with each event
holding to the same simple set of principles: that the day is held
on the mid-summer solstice and that all concerts and events are
free and accessible to the public.

Typically this means that the music is brought out onto the streets,
though venues are also encouraged to get in on the act!

Go to our Gallery section to see pictures from the last five years
    of events in the UK.

2012 was the first year that the UK made a co-ordinated
contribution towards Music Day and the number of events taking
place has been growing year on year, regardless of what day of
the week the date falls on.

We want everyone to think about how they can participate in a UK
contribution to Music Day — whether that be performing,
organising an event, convincing a venue to take their music
outside or lending your time, equipment and support.

Of course you can also just turn up and join in the celebrations! To
get this event taking hold in the UK we need people to spread the
word. Please join our mailing list, follow us on social media, or
send our press release out to your own networks, friends and
colleagues. The UK can then truly embrace the amazing worldwide
phenomenon known as Music Day – it's simply the best way to
celebrate the longest day of the year!

World Humanist Day is celebrated every year on June 21. It is an
opportunity for humanists and humanist organizations to publicize
the positive values of Humanism and to share the global concerns
of the Humanist movement, and we’ve been celebrating the day
    since the 1980s.

Humanist groups around the world mark World Humanist Day with
a wide variety of activities ranging from activism to parties. World
Humanist Day may be recognized with official proclamations or
promotional campaigns to educate people about the growth of the
secular community and the ethical values of humanists.

Groups may run courses or conferences to deepen understanding
of the principles of Humanism and programmes run by humanist
organizations. They may emphasize their global solidarity by
raising awareness and money for a freethought group working in a
different country. Or groups may simply throw a party or share a
    picnic to celebrate.....

    Good morning lovely Alphabettys

I hope you're all well on this 'blooming' glorious
    Thursday!

Apologies for lateness in posting this everyone.

    19-25 JUNE 2017

British Flowers Week is the annual celebration of British flowers
and the UK cut flower industry.

Now in our fifth year, we're all about promoting British flowers,
their growers and the independent florists working with them.

Started by New Covent Garden Flower Market in 2013, British
Flowers Week is an annual celebration of the wealth and variety of
    British cut flowers and foliage.

We're shining the spotlight on British flowers, working with
independent florists and the wider flower industry to show what
    they're made of.

    We aim to:

Showcase great British flowers through great British floristry

Raise awareness of which British flowers are in season when

Encourage the public to buy more British flowers

Just like with food, people are increasingly demanding more
locally grown flowers to celebrate the seasons and support British
growers. Often scented, British flowers have a natural charm,
beauty and just-picked freshness that make them the florist’s
    favourite.

Up until the 1970s, the only flowers you saw came from flower
farmers in Britain. Today, most of the flowers in your high street
flower shop will have been grown by large scale commercial
growers and routed through the Dutch auctions.

We're aiming to change this. With the support of the floral industry
    we're bringing British back.

    How to get involved

    Buy British

It goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway. Buying British is
the best way to support the campaign and back the local growers
producing eye-popping flowers. Buy from the specialist
wholesalers at the Flower Market at New Covent Garden Market, a
grower from the Flowers from the Farm network or a local
    supplier from our list here.

    Post with #BritishFlowersWeek

Use the hashtag #BritishFlowersWeek to connect to the campaign
and make it easier for people to discover your content. Hashtags
help with visibility and engagement so you’ll be gathering
followers while you’re promoting British flowers. Mention
@MarketFlowers in your tweets and ‘grams too to let us know
what you’re up to and share your posts.

International Widows Day takes place every year on 23rd June. It
was initially launched by the Loomba Foundation at the House of
Lords in London in 2005. The date, 23 June, was chosen because
on this day, Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, Lord Loomba’s mother
and the inspiration for the Foundation, became a widow.

International Widows Day (IWD) is a global day of focus for
effective action to raise awareness and help widows and their
children around the world who are suffering through poverty,
illiteracy, HIV/AIDS, conflict and social injustice. In 2015 there are
an estimated 259 million widows and 585 million children in the
world, together with their family members the number is well over
a billion people. Through no fault of their own they lose their
husband or father and continue to suffer for the rest of their lives
    through stigma, discrimination and poverty.

On the 22nd December 2010 at the 65th UN General Assembly, the
United Nations recognised 23rd June as International Widows Day.

The 2017 event will take place on Friday, June 23.

TYDTWDay® was first celebrated in 1999. This year marks the
    19th annual event.

It was created by Pet Sitters International (PSI) to celebrate the
great companions dogs make and promote their adoptions.

The event encourages employers to experience the joys of pets
in the workplace for one day to support their local pet community.

PSI feels that through the events, non-pet owners are able to
witness the special bond their co-workers have with their pets
firsthand and be encouraged to adopt a new best friend of their
    own.
