    World Alzheimer's Day

    Remember Me

World Alzheimer's Day is on 21 September each year. While
World Alzheimer's Month offers a longer period of time for
Alzheimer associations worldwide to raise awareness, World
Alzheimer's Day marks the pinnacle of the Month.

World Alzheimer's Month is observed in September every
    year.

World Alzheimer's Month was launched in September
    2012.

The decision to introduce the full month, to contain the
existing World Alzheimer's Day, was made to enable
national and local Alzheimer associations worldwide to
extend the reach of their awareness programmes over a
    longer period of time.

September 2016 will mark the fifth global World
Alzheimer’s Month™, an international campaign to raise
    awareness and challenge stigma.

The theme for World Alzheimer's Month 2016 is
    Remember Me.

We are asking you to get involved by sharing your favourite
memories, or memories of a loved one, on social media
this September with the hashtags #RememberMe #WAM2016.

Alzheimer associations in more than 60 countries will be
taking part in this year's campaign.

The impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the
stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia
    remains a global problem.

    Hobbit Day

The birthday of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, two of the
main hobbit characters from The Lord of the Rings

    18th – 24th September

Good morning lovely Alphabettys in Happy Chatty Land!

I hope you're all well on this thoughtful yet
    scrumptious Thursday!

    Today it's ....

Thursday 22 September is World Rhino Day

At Rhino HQ we're celebrating all five species of rhino -
Black, White, Greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan.

It's also a chance to remind ourselves why rhinos are so
important to our environment, and communities living
    alongside these majestic animals.

    Five Reasons Why Rhinos Matter

Rhinos are vital for the environment

Rhinos help maintain natural balance within their habitat.
The Greater one-horned rhino in India and Nepal helps to
germinate the seeds of the Trewia tree with its dung.

In Africa, scientists are only just understanding the vital
part played by White rhinos in creating and preserving
grasslands which many species depend upon. As a result,
rhinos are now classed as a “keystone species’ - playing
a key role in supporting other animals and their
    environment.

    Rhinos are an umbrella species

What’s an umbrella species? Well, when we protect rhinos
we are also protecting all the other animals living in their
shared habitat including birdlife, fish, insects and other
    mammals.

If rhinos go, it’s harder to look after the little guys who
don’t always attract as much attention as they deserve.

    Rhinos bring eco-tourism

People need rhinos too. In areas where rhinos and humans
live alongside each other, these charismatic animals bring
job opportunities through eco-tourism which, in turn, can
    help regenerate the local economy.

Rhinos are part of our natural heritage

As long as humans have walked the planet, rhinos have
also been part of our art, our cultural history and the fabric
    of life.

If rhinos became extinct, it would be a loss for the whole
of humanity, but even more so for the communities where
rhinos are part of their heritage.

If we lose rhinos, we've lost to crime syndicates

The people at the top running the rhino horn trade don’t
just stick to the illegal wildlife trade. They traffic weapons,
counterfeit goods and people too, and fund terrorism.

They’re not the kind of people we want to win the poaching
war - but you can help stop them.

    WEAR JEANS, CHANGE LIVES

    FRIDAY 23 SEPTEMBER

    WHAT WE DO

The monies raised by schools and workplaces on Jeans for
Genes Day fund a range of initiatives that improve the lives
of children affected by a genetic disorder.

We run an annual grant programme that is open to all UK
charities and patient groups caring for children with genetic
disorders. Read about the grants we will give from the
funds raised on Jeans for Genes Day in 2016.
    Source: geneticdisordersuk.org/grantprogramme/2016grantrecipients

We develop resources for schools to make pupils more
aware and empathetic of the difficult lives that children
    with genetic disorders lead.

We fund the work of Genetic Disorders UK, the national
charity dedicated to supporting families affected by
    genetic disorders.
    Source: geneticdisordersuk.org/

    WHO WE HELP

There are between 4,000 and 6,000 diagnosed genetic
    disorders.

It is estimated that one in 25 children is affected by a
genetic disorder and therefore 30,000 babies and children
are newly diagnosed in the UK each year.

Some genetic disorders are apparent at birth while others
are diagnosed at different stages throughout childhood,
    and sometimes into adulthood.

their stories about living with genetic disorders.
