Who's watching this new series, which started last night on BBC2?

At long last, programmes about the Dark Ages, albeit the later half of them, the 9th century, chronicling the struggle between the Saxons and the Vikings for supremacy over England.

The series is based on novels by Bernard Cornwell, who wrote "Sharpe". Apparently Cornwell himself is descended from the main protagonist, Uhtred of Bamburgh, Northumberland.

I must admit, the attention to detail is very good. Several of the Viking characters are played by Scandinavians, complete with plaited beards, and not a single horned helmet in sight, thank God! (Apparently, they were a Hollywood invention!)

It's very brutal in parts, too.

There's an interesting clash between Saxon Christianity and the Vikings' Norse gods, too.

Are you watching it? Are you enjoying it?

I emailed the BBC to find out if there was a transmission date yet, but there isn't one that they're publicising yet.

However, you can keep an eye on progress with this link....

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0344rr3

(The recent episode that is mentioned on the link is part of the repeats they are doing).
You can see all the previous episodes on that link, too.

On this link, you can play the 30second trailer for the new series, the one that's been on the TV recently.
(I wonder if you can put it on a continuous loop? )

You can view other short clips on that link, too.

Have set the machine to record just in case I fall asleep (which often happens when I haven't slept well the night before) then I can watch it when the insomnia kicks in at 3am

I have just finished watching the three-part drama-documentary about 1066 presented by Dan Snow, and there was a bit of Viking fighting in that too, (the last ever Viking invasion until Ikea ), so am all fired up with kings and saxons and axes and broadswords and chain mail.

Personally I preferred the 10th Kingdom to the Last Kingdom.

Is been a good program so far, the books are excellent too. We have had numerous monarchs over the centuries but only one has ever been known as "The Great".

I like finding out about the Dark Ages.

I think we should have more dramas and/or docudramas about them.

They're pretty overlooked in terms of TV coverage.

    Yes, it's really good!

I particularly like the use of real scandiwegians to play the Viking/Dane roles!

Also interesting that even in those far times, Britain was multicultural, with each faction, Britons, Celts, Angles, Saxons and Danes all vieing to keep their culture, customs and religion!

    How times have changed! Not!

I was interested to see that Beocca, the priest, could marry. I shall investigate when the celibacy law came in.

Edit... strange. It would seem that by Alfred's reign, priests were required to be unmarried and celibate.
So I don't understand how Beocca can marry, unless he renounces being a priest.
