3-6 Month Emergency Fund Challenge!! 20th Oct 15 at 8:30 AM
    Morning Everyone....

I have been wondering for MONTHS now about what would happen if there was some kind of Emergency....I am self-employed and also starting a new Business which will also be on a self-employed basis....so I will never get holiday pay or sick pay....although I AM hoping to maybe get an employed Job but that would only be for a couple of days a Week so it won't cover me completely if something were to happen....

My health is not wonderful at the moment, and hasn't been for a while, but I'm going to start trying to lose Weight once I've moved Flats (which I'm doing this Weekend!!).

So the point of this Challenge is to save up at least 3 month's worth of wages....that can be a different amount for each person....and some people might want to save up to 6 months if they are feeling ambitious!!

Me personally, I want to save 3 months worth of wages which for me will be £6000.

Now, there is ABSOLUTELY NO TIME LIMIT on this Challenge...in fact I suspect it could take me Years to get to the point of having 3 months wages as Savings....For now I can only afford £5 per week but as my new Business builds up (hopefully!!) then I should be able to afford more.

This Thread is mainly for us all to encourage each other to keep on Saving and to celebrate when we reach milestones, however large or small they may be.....Like for me, when I get to having £500 I will be ecstatic!!

I also wanted to say that if at any time an emergency crops up and you need to use your Fund and then start again then please don't worry about doing that.....It's what the Emergency Fund is there for after all....

I don't like having Savings in the Bank as I get too tempted to spend them so I'm going to invest in a Terramundi to put my Savings into at least at first......but other's may choose to use their Bank Accounts or a Tin from Poundworld...or stuff it under your Mattress!!

Sooooo.....Here we go.....I'll add the names below as people Join....xXx

    Hi Everyone

Not posted in a while as I'd not managed to save anymore cash into my emergency for ages. I've managed not to spend any of it either, which is good. I'm finally able to add £30 to it, so my total is now £1130. Creeping up to my one of my interim targets of £1250.

Hope everyone is doing ok and managing to save - even a little helps towards your goal. Helen I've updated my signature with my new total.

Hi everyone. I haven't posted much as not much to report really.

Sadly, I underestimated the cost of my DD's carpet by £150 and her bed/mattress cost more than expected- and then I also forgot to budget for new bedding (we got a double bed, when she previously had single). So it means, I am playing catch up. Luckily I am able to use December's and January's surplus money to cover the difference.

We also got a refund from Argos for £77 because they had an offer on their beds and mattresses that they honoured for us.

We also went slightly over budget for our groceries because I had to do a Makro run sooner than expected. (Andrex doesn't last as long as Cushelle ). Luckily I have managed to move some money from a couple of other categories which will cover us. As I use YNAB, I always allocate a certain amount each month to 'Stuff I Forgot To Budget For'.

So, no extra funds for me, but still feeling positive, and more importantly, 'in control' of things.

Anxiety is a pain, I feel for anyone who suffers. I have OCD, which is an anxiety disorder and it's often horrendous. I am quite stable at the moment though, thanks goodness. Sending good thoughts and hugs to all that need them.

Please add another £15 for me.
I have told my Chip savings app to save slightly lower amounts from now on as I think it was starting to get a bit over zealous (if an app can do that)

£104.77 total ... Oh go on, I'll top it up to £105

    3.05% wooh

As I budget for council tax every month but only pay 10 months, I usually put that amount in savings on the two months I don't pay council tax. So that can go towards this challenge. I think is normally Feb and March?

    Hi guys, you ok helen

hope you are all keeping warm its really turned cold now,

ive be thinking of my financial goals for next year already as the december wage usually gets paid early and it always seems a long time till we get paid again!

so ive decided to make just one over payment directly to the mortgage each month and move any extra money (surveys, selling stuff etc) to my emergency fund which could eventually help me be mortgage neutral

so £100 has gone into the account today (£160 now)

    take care everyone

Hello all, have you been having snow?

My emergency fund is doing it's job! I had a mix up over car insurance and ended up having to pay another 70- odd quid.
Which has come out of the emergency fund.

    Total £233.57

edit : Please add £3.43 to make it up to £237 total, thanks

    #2 update

Small bit of interest added so another £5.12 in the pot.

    New total £3904.72 aka 43.39%
hoping to have a good amount added this month as my usual amount should go over including the annual interest from tucking it away in a RS for a yr. Although I had to dip and restart it a few months ago for the new car I still reckon I'm due a few quid interest. It all adds up

No snow here yet 166 although I heard a rumour they had some just west of me so I wouldn't be surprise if we get some.

    Keep on keeping on everyone.
