Heron Foods/Farmfoods Freezer Shops -spot any good buys? 26th Mar 14 at 1:50 PM
I am lucky enough to have a branch of Heron Foods in my town. It's a discount freezer chain, similar to Farmfoods (but a bit better in my opinion). It stocks heavily discounted brand names and unbranded foods at rock bottom prices.

In the spirit of the 'Good/Bad Buys at Aldi/Lidl' thread, I thought I'd start a thread focusing on these stores, so that we can share news of good buys.

Hopefully keeping it positive, with not too many posts saying you wouldn't be seen dead shopping there...

In Heron in particular, the special offers on brand names come and go in a twinkling, but there are some constants.

I really like their frozen lambs' liver at 450g for £1. It's too small to fry in pieces but is brilliant for faggots, liver pate and for casseroles.

The cooking bacon is often very salty but also often has huge chunks of gammon in - brilliant for pies, quiches, casseroles, faggots (again!) and pizzas.
Oxo cubes are the cheapest I have seen anywhere at £1 for 18, and they often have Vimto cordial - both regular and sugar-free - at £1.

I could go on and on but does anyone else have some good buys to share from these stores? (Or advice on what to avoid? Hopefully there won't be too many of those items. )

Just a quickie - if you have signed up to the Heron Foods email, check your inbox for a Happy Easter email - it has a link to a £1 off a £10 spend printable voucher. Expiry date 20th April, and you can print more than one voucher, so if you have multi-spends coming up, you can save a few quid.
If you sign up for offers you will also receive a voucher.

Dr Oetker Ristorante large pepperoni pizza £1.25
Oykos pack of four salted caramel yogurts 75p
Big bite tubs of ice cream, caramel sauce, strawberry sauce and choc chip, two for £1.
Three boxes of Wrigleys extra white chewing gum for £1. Think the cartons have something like 50 in them and they are over £1 so these are great value.

I had the 6 rashers for 99p / 12 for £1.75 Oakpark back bacon from Heron Foods today.
What isn't marked clearly on the pack is that it is Irish bacon, it's absolutely delicious. Very little shrinkage and unlike some Irish bacon, not too salty.

    Heron Foods Bargains, spotted 29.04.17
Spotted in my local Heron in County Durham. Some of these prices/quantities are 'as I remember' and as Heron-ites know, some of these bargains vanish faster than snow in summer, but this is what I think I saw:

    Freezer:
5 Birds Eye coated chicken 'steaks', £1.75

2x 500ml tubs of branded ice -cream, choc & vanilla, strawberry & vanilla. Had the logo associated with Walls in the UK, I think. £1. 59p each.

Aunt Bessie's Roast Potatoes in Duck Fat £1.99

    Various cheesecakes, gateaux £1.99

The Xsell freezer had mostly the usual fare, battered cod 500g £1.50, spicy chicken breast strips ready cooked £1.25 (These are quite spicy, be warned!) chicken nuggets and coated / uncoated chicken breasts. £1.25/£1.50 500g.

    Chiller
700g Wyke Farms Cheddar cheese £3.50

    500g Activia natural yogurt 69p

4 Muller chocolate and caramel dessert pots, 80g, 75p

6 Muller Pumpkin Spiced Latte yogurts £1 29p each

Rolls of Jus Rol ready to use puff pastry gluten free/standard 3 for £1

    2 I Can't Believe It's Not Butter 500g £1 59p each B.B date mid May

    Dry goods

    80g Celebrations mini boxes 59p

Fox's Mints Polar Bear jelly sweets 2 bags for £1

Galaxy Golden Eggs 2 80g bags for £1

    Robinson's fruit squashes 900ml 89p

Vimto NAS cordial with extra free £1

    1kg box malted Shreddies £1.99

    Grain muesli/granola 99p

    Mornflake superfast oats 500g 99p

    Porridge pots 39p each

Plus all the usual suspects in Heron - branded canned soft drinks 3 for £1, 2 x 500ml branded soft drinks bottles £1, Ben Shaw's bottled drinks 500ml 31p, bacon mis-shapes 907g for £1, wide choice of c. 150g cheeses for £1, good range of cold meats, RTE salads at low prices.

In the fridges of my Heron - Mullerlight yoghurts, Blackcurrant & Liquorice flavour single standard pots with an end June date are 4 for £1.
It's one of my favourite "Limited Edition" flavours (along with Turkish Delight if you remember that) so I bought a few quids-worth.

Been a few times over the last few weeks and have to say there have been no deals I would think are worth posting on here. Hope things pick up or your pickings have been better.
Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.

This isn't a good buy but probably the best value you can get at the moment.

The Farmfoods leaflet was delivered today, didn't see much new or exciting on it.

What caught my eye was the 'deal' on frozen veg. I buy these as I find the range and quality is good and compared with, say, Birds Eye it's still good value BUT....

It doesn't seem long ago that the offer on veg was 3 bags for £2 or about 66p per bag. On this leaflet it's 5 for £4 so 80p per bag. That's a 14% increase when we're told that inflation is running at below 3%. And that's without the shrinking bags (or rather contents) being taken into account.

I can't help thinking that it's because they can.

The veg has been 5 for £4 for at least the last two leaflets - could well be longer.

The best deal I saw on today's offers was PG Tips 240s - buy 2 for £6 which, with the coupons attached and careful buying, could reduce to £2.70 per 240

Since Heron were bought by B&M there have been changes even in smaller stores, with for example the introduction of toiletries.
Now Herons seem to be introducing a Christmas selection which to me makes the store layout look very strange as well as obviously leaving less room for their traditional ranges.

At least Heron's "Xcell" value range is still ongoing for now.

500g breaded cod portions @ £1-50 are very good, just like the battered ones I've had recently.
