Awwwwwwwwwww twin panda boys born in Atlanta Zoo six days ago....Congratulations to Lu Lu

Just an update on the Atlanta panda twins....

This thread was started jut over two years ago when the twin pandas Mei Lun and Mei Huan were born in Atlanta Zoo. They are the only surviving twin pandas still surviving born in a US Zoo. Well they celebrated their 2nd birthday back in July and they are still together in the same enclosure and will be until they reach sexual maturity at about age 4.

The chances that both parents have the brown allele are ordinarily very low, suggests Wang. But the coincidence would be much more likely if the pandas were closely related. "The habitat in the Qinling Mountains is seriously fragmented and the population density is very high," says Wang. "The brown pandas could be an indication of local inbreeding.""

Good news on Washington cub Bei Bei who had been acting listless and off his food for a few days, they did an ultrasound on him and it looks like everything was OK.

Bei Bei’s veterinary exam went very well. Veterinarians took radiographs, blood samples and a urine sample, and looked in his stomach and colon with an endoscope camera. There was evidence consistent with a mucous stool, but they did not find an intestinal blockage. The lab results were normal, except for some bacteria in his urine suggestive of a possible urinary tract infection. Dr. Josh Hobbs from Friendship Hospital for Animals performed an abdominal ultrasound, which confirmed these findings. Veterinarians suspect that Bei Bei continued to feel sick from his mucous stool on Sunday, Nov. 26, causing his reluctance to eat and decreased stool production. They gave him fluids and medication to alleviate his nausea and started him on antibiotics for a possible urinary tract infection.

The panda house will reopen tomorrow and visitors will be able to see Bei Bei, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. Bei Bei will begin venturing outside again after keepers are confident that he is eating and drinking normally. Visitors will notice that he has a shaved patch of fur on his belly where veterinarians performed an ultrasound.
