making golden delicious erm.. edible?

got a groceries delivery last week with golden delicious instead of what I would call actual apples (sorry to thse who like them!), kids broke into the pack and didn't like them so I can't return them.

Do they cook at all? they don't look like they will? I really don't want to waste food so if necessary I will eat them, but I'd rather try and turn them into something nice if anyone has a recipe?

I'd just sweat them down a little with a bit of sugar and top with a crumble/pastry. Then serve with lashings of super hot custard.

All apples cook.... you might even get away with putting them under a crumble top raw....

I don't like them either they are just tasteless.. I'd grate them into a cake and feed to the children with custard.

Or put in a pie with other fruit with flavour.. blackberries, other apples, pear, eg

i sometimes make an apple cake out of the Good Housekeeping book that you could use them in, I have used them before as they were cheap and it turned out fine. It is an apple and sultana cake,if you want me to type up the recipe let me know

The cake should have a layer of cheese through it but I always miss it out as I dont fancy it.

cheers! I've never cooked non-cooking apples so figured these would disintegrate (and they'll certainly be tasteless lol!)
but one spicy crumble (with blackberries i've got frozen) and one cake, both with custard then -

yum :) thank you, - I've got a massive goodhousekeeping recipe book, I'll have a look through and see what there is (no sultanas in the house, but sure I've got something around that will work)

I thinly slice them into a dish (raw), add a tablespoon of golden syrup and cover with crumble - we call it golden apple crumble :) (this works with wrinkly apples too:))

I hate them too - Golden Delicious! hah - they should prosecute under the Trades Descriptions Act!
however - I have used them for caramelised apple slices (the addition of Brown or Demarara sugar gives them some taste).

Ordered bramley via online shopping got gala instead, it wasn't even a sub! Some poor order packer doesn't seem to know the difference. Do gala stand up well to cooking? I wanted to make an apple crumble.

I went away for a few days and neighbours DD fed the mog - I left her a bowl of apples to help herself to. They were a mix of Coxes, Braebrun etc (no Golden delicious which certainly aren't delicious!). She only had one or two so last night I avoided the Eurovision 'song' thing by peeling, coring, slicing and sweating down to make crumbles and pies. As a single I make them in ramekins so I always have a pud handy, they also look good for guests decorated with a mint leaf etc. Any apples will cook, some just take a little longer than others :)

you can cook eating apples but I would cook the apples before making into pies tarts etc - I made apple tart with Braeburn apples a couple of months ago and even after 35 mins in the oven the apples were still a bit on the crisp side!
