Buy it now on a car - seller changed mind

My OH listed his car on ebay and put a starting price of £500 and Buy It Now of £850. Guy rang last night (an hour after auction had started) and said he wanted to buy it... asked some questions etc - hubby was honest and told him all faults (minor) etc and guy was happy. He straight away did buy it now, despite hubby asking whether he wanted to come see it first etc as they were relatively local....the guy was ADAMANT that he wanted to buy it now and not wait, he definitely wanted it etc.....
He came this morning, took the car out with hubby and basically was a bit scared of the power (it is a rally spec 1.9 peugeot 205) got out of car, started immediately walking off saying that it was not "safe" (it is fine, its old but good for its age, use etc!) and that there was too much work needed on it (which my hubby had already spoken with him about last night before he clicked BIN) and then got in his car without answering, and drove off ... fast!
Hubby is MEGA peeved of course and we are now worrying that this guy has wasted our time, money (£13 to list on ebay) and now he may well leave us bad feedback etc... I reckon they (he and his "dad") MAY have been dealers of sorts...they came with trade plates and most people wouldnt come during daytime i wouldnt have thought.....(hubby is self employed so was able to be there and i am off sick hence i am here....lol)
Is there anything we can do to avoid him giving us rubbish feedback/give HIM bad feedback....as i said, we have lost the listing fee, time and my hubby has lost money as not been working for the morning!
We need to now re-list..... anything we can do to avoid this next time???? Was BIN a bad idea??

Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

Well you could request if buyer agree to do a mutual agreement to get back your FVF, or you could open a non paying buyer dispute.
If you do the latter, and the buyer does not respond, they normally don't, in that case when you close the case the buyer can not leave you a negative feedback. If he does you can dispute it and eBay will remove it because he did not pay! However it might upset him if does much business on eBay, as he will get a strike against his account.
Better to give him a call, set aside any emotion, and ask him if he is happy they do a mutual agreement to cancel the transaction, and ask that don't leave any negative feedbacks, normally if he is human this will work.
Remember you as seller can't leave negative feedbacks, so you don't have much power in this situation, if you want to keep your account in good standing try with friendly communication.
I assume you don't want to let eBay keep your FVF, so this is the way forward.0 -
I'd definitely open a Non paying bidder dispute, not do a mutual cancellation, that way you get your fees back, he can't leave feedback and he gets a black mark on his account0

I agree that is ideally the best, however it is a chance he refutes the claim, saying item not as described etc.
Diplomacy or war, hard to choose, heart says war, but head and experience says diplomacy!0 -

he would have to pay to do that.
filing a mutual means the OP can lose out on fees0 -
Hi thanks - we have tried to ring him since he ran off down the drive.... but no answer and phone switched off so dont think we will be able to sort it out amicably! Its just such a pain as we obviously have lost the £13 it cost us to list it.... so he has basically cost us £13 grrrrrr...... its just plain rude!!
Any tips on how to avoid buyers doing this if we relist??
Should we NOT do a buy it now? How does it work if people wanna come see the car..... is it best to just have it on start price then auction....?

Car needs a general tune-up, but starts first time and runs well. Front passenger side shock absorber needs replacing but this is only a minor job.
You're asking top condition money for a car that potentially needs work. Perhaps they know a fair bit about these cars and noticed something on the test drive, your rear beam looks very low.
And your car isn't a special edition either.0 -

To be fair, top condition money for one of these cars would be £3000 ... they go for a significant amount if in near perfect condition! The car IS in fact a special edition - without going into detail as my hubby has just listed a number of special edition details that i cant be bothered to type lol....oh, and the rear beam is low because the car is in fact lowered with sport shocks on. My hubby knows a "fair amount" about these cars having owned 3 and rebuilt 2! He only didn't spend the time and money on this one because we weren't in a financial position to do so!
To be honest, we arent annoyed that he doesnt WANT it, thats not the issue - it is more the fact that we suggested numerous times that he might wanna come and SEE it before doing BIN... he refused this and went ahead..... and then instead of just simply talking to us about it, he literally ran off down the drive and took off in his car before my hubby could even get out of the car!Baldrick, does it have to be this way? I personally think that with cars on ebay it's better to list them as a classified at the price you want, or slightly higher, then when your buyer comes to see the car and pay there's room to haggle and still get what you want
