LBM in 2003.. What have I been doing since??! 5th Jan 12 at 3:32 PM
    Hello

I have decided to start a diary. Have lurked on here since early 2009, subscribed to loads of threads, loved all the camaraderie and found it very useful for getting shot of debt, starting savings and all that kind of good stuff but then have slipped and skidded into more debt, especially as I left a FT job this spring and yet seem to be still living as if I was FT and not PT...loving feeling more human though and seeing more of the kids but financially it's not great. I need to welcome and appreciate living a much more frugal life.

HOWEVER..even writing that seems bonkers as for a household we are well off with an embarrassingly high income of about 90k gross. But clearly as the newly updated signature shows there is no hiding that we (OH, me and 2 DDs) are living beyond our means, failing to prioritise the right things and generally need to rectify all this otherwise, well no otherwise, it simply can't continue. All the savings and OP pot will go and I won't be able to rob Peter to pay Paul anymore which is what I think I have been doing.. Not sure ( which is also embarrassing ) but must have been plus then started to use the 0% credit cards again which can be a slippery slope if not used properly.

I am going away now to do some more on why I have got myself into this mess, ensure I am clear there is no going back and also what my goals are. Hoping this will help me focus and as you guys ( hope you're reading are such a supportive bunch on here I am hoping you will also help me! But even if no one reads, I think I need the discipline of sticking to a programme..I can't afford to slip again. This needs to be a new permanent way of life. Currently we try and do all the things that make us feel good about ourselves, the world, the environment, our family..but perhaps we can't do it all and need to make choices? I guess everyone must but we have just not had to as yet.

So a few things to do. Sorry for rambling first post but I needed to take the first step!! Which also reminds me must check out the 'what DFW things have you done today' thread..that used to be magic. Used to love doing that 'stock take' every day

    Onwards and upwards

    Cheers

    Brizzle

    Congratulations on the remortgage!

How annoying about phoning up to make overpayments, that really would be a deal breaker for me! But I am antisocial

Thanks - yes it's to do with estimates and checking whether I want the term to change. Bizarre thing is that they are an app based Bank (At0m) so complained but will keep an eye on it. To be honest I will probably put the OPs in a high interest (well as much as gets to be high interest these days) and pay over in the thousands. As I can't get it back will also make me think hard about it.

And in other great news I FINALLY got my TCB payment and have requested it. £153 coming my way. Result. Brilliant.

great news on mortgage and TCB - I'm still slogging away slightly demotivated by the fact we might need to put DS op on a credit card or put any planned overpayments towards it but I didn't get into this debt overnight and wont get out of it over night either ...... I have returned to the world of ebay - lets see what the gods of watchers and bids hit me with this time

Best of luck with it Debs...any update?

    Thanks for popping by everyone.

Had a lazy day yesterday. Much needed. Increasingly cancelling stuff to free up time which can be unstructured for OH and I..think it may be (one of) the tricks to keeping us sane.

Money is looking better next month mortgage wise so may divert some of the savings to a much needed new cooker. Our current one has been a nightmare for cakes for ages. Think the thermoregulator is shot.

One bonus this week was delivery of a box of 6 bottles of wine for £4.99. Just a delivery charge and no tie in commitment. We had one bottle on Friday eve and it was nice too. Result.

Need to update the signature after having done the accounts. Can't be bothered to do today but I think we are hanging on in there and we are certainly paying down the final card quite well and saving for the December and January tax bills which is good. Stuff still needing to be decluttered to EBay and CS. Had to throw a work dress away as had moth holes I could do with a day to do mindless chores that need to be done during the week, but working too hard in RL for that at the moment.

But everyone healthy and working hard. Even DD2 has started GCSEs with a pretty good mindset

    Hope everyone is good

What a party we can have.. ... gin, free wine, cake and a mobility scooter

    Yours or mine Beanie?

Good day today. Meal planned mainly using stuff we already have, went to an exercise class for first time in oh about 2 months, (meant to ask, PF, how's the exercise going?) and sorted a load of work. Still so thrilled got my accounts in. This way I have time to prepare for any nasty surprises.

Early night this evening...pooped and another hectic week ahead

    Have a good one all

Exercise not great - have hurt my heel and worried about making it worse, so sticking with walking and have managed quite well at that. Even 2 just for walks - walks this week (rather than to get somewhere walks, iyswim)

Have spoken to DH about going to see a PT even for a couple of months, just so I can get over the hurdle, plus I'm not great exercising in the winter. Hope it might keep me focused. Will keep you posted.

Well done on getting back on the horse (or spin bike)

Beanie raspberry gin - now we're talking! I can bring some blackberry liqueur to the party too

Can also add 2 bottles of raspberry vodka, damson gin, raspberry gin, sloe gin and quince liqueur, marshmallow vodka and caramel vodka to the party..... (and around 3 dozen bottles of red, 1/2 dozen of rose and 1/2 dozen prosecco..... also sat in garage) hic!

Sorry to hear about the injury PF.. maybe a PT will also help you pace yourself? Encourage but not overdo it as it were?

Had planned to exercise again on Wednesday but think I have a parents evening instead. Maybe will cycle to school - better than nothing.

So..scores on the doors time as Caz would say.

We missed our main 'spare/savings' target. Was back to around 20% which of course means that the tax fund/last CC targets are not as good as they could be. At least we are spending less than we have which is great in one way, but we will not get shot of the debt and build the funds we need to if we don't keep on trying and improving our behaviours towards spends.

Income went up. That's the thing. I am earning more and OH is on OT a lot. It all helps (hugely) but it can't be the sole answer..see comments above. Spends on groceries and alcohol bust their targets, albeit that August was a very frugal month. I also spent quite a bit on new work and casual clothes, and paid another instalment of an school (but overseas) trip.

So this month need to focus hard on keeping discretionary spends to a minimum and continuing to meal plan. OH is threatening to clear the loft which would probably produce some EBay items, but it's also a daunting, several day task which I am not sure we are currently up to energy wise. Will ponder.

Seeing friends this eve which will be lovely and then starting the university open day rounds. Looking forward to this next adventure
