LBM in 2003.. What have I been doing since??! 5th Jan 12 at 3:32 PM
    Hello

I have decided to start a diary. Have lurked on here since early 2009, subscribed to loads of threads, loved all the camaraderie and found it very useful for getting shot of debt, starting savings and all that kind of good stuff but then have slipped and skidded into more debt, especially as I left a FT job this spring and yet seem to be still living as if I was FT and not PT...loving feeling more human though and seeing more of the kids but financially it's not great. I need to welcome and appreciate living a much more frugal life.

HOWEVER..even writing that seems bonkers as for a household we are well off with an embarrassingly high income of about 90k gross. But clearly as the newly updated signature shows there is no hiding that we (OH, me and 2 DDs) are living beyond our means, failing to prioritise the right things and generally need to rectify all this otherwise, well no otherwise, it simply can't continue. All the savings and OP pot will go and I won't be able to rob Peter to pay Paul anymore which is what I think I have been doing.. Not sure ( which is also embarrassing ) but must have been plus then started to use the 0% credit cards again which can be a slippery slope if not used properly.

I am going away now to do some more on why I have got myself into this mess, ensure I am clear there is no going back and also what my goals are. Hoping this will help me focus and as you guys ( hope you're reading are such a supportive bunch on here I am hoping you will also help me! But even if no one reads, I think I need the discipline of sticking to a programme..I can't afford to slip again. This needs to be a new permanent way of life. Currently we try and do all the things that make us feel good about ourselves, the world, the environment, our family..but perhaps we can't do it all and need to make choices? I guess everyone must but we have just not had to as yet.

So a few things to do. Sorry for rambling first post but I needed to take the first step!! Which also reminds me must check out the 'what DFW things have you done today' thread..that used to be magic. Used to love doing that 'stock take' every day

    Onwards and upwards

    Cheers

Thanks Lou, yes it is and if it's only once a year think it's worth it.

Quiet day planned today. Movie this afternoon and a roast dinner, before the whole circus of the working week starts again..

Will take snacks into cinema so that no extra spends other than the actual tickets.

Sun shining so maybe the washing will dry, that'd be good.

    Hi MfD

PITA actually as the car played up again.. But fixed now and had a productive day WAH. Eventually!

Big week at work this week so head down and getting on with it. Will be able to breathe in about 2 weeks all being well.

Small TTs being made. Large items didn't sell, but have relisted and some interest. Host family arrangement really beginning to work out well. Very pleased we took the leap. A NSD today which is blooming unusual! But welcome!! Will update my sig.

Away with OH for a late birthday present this weekend. Just one eve but will be bliss to be off domestic duties! In laws are in charge which they will enjoy.

Onwards and upwards. Hope everyone is OK

Will update on targets soon... Am crashin' and burnin' on 5:2 but everything else is pootling along.. Oh although more sleep would be good. Well behind on that!! But guess many of us are

All good. Big week at work went well and in fact ended up only being a 3 day week..result. Definitely worked the same hours as if it had been 4 though in those 3 days!!

Done some feel good things for me. Had hair cut and coloured. Taken advantage of the new Co-op loyalty scheme and got £3.87 already via my grocery bill and it was delivered to my door Off to get wine for a friend's themed party at the weekend and dinner is in the SC. Interest being shown on EBay items..now just need to convert it! Fingers crossed.

Other than that, laundry, pegging out, the money shuffle, TTs, that's it for that day so far....where does the time go??!

    Hope alls well

    Xx

And then decided would do a job that has needed doing for a while (using TCB/comparison sites to get some life ins) - wifi is playing up and so its thrown me out twice. Grr. I so hate it when wifi connectivity is flaky. Think OH believed its just user error when happened to DD2 yesterday eve...he better not try that approach with me this evening!

On a better note, got stressed tweaking YNAB..why won't my forecast income be greater than my proposed expenditure () but am beginning to get it into shape. Have asked accountant for a meeting next month to kick me into action with the records, he will then tell me whats due and to whom and I can then take action and/or breathe (the latter is optional ) I have also updated my panel reading and we have suggested a BIN to someone on one of the items which would be good if it goes. DD1 is still faithfully cycling to school and so saving us bus fares..happy days Have charged all the phones and devices whilst the panels were pumping out the energy..so small benefits to a lovely day weather wise.

    Update on targets:

    - meal planning is going VERY well. Being a host family is definitely focussing our minds and its working well. When OH is away for work it may get harder, but we will do it
    - 5:2...lets just not even go there
    - host family - its good..he's a good kid
    - Business Development..some ideas, but no progress as yet so poor show there
    - Decluttering.. need to do some more, 29 items to go this month and there is only a week left
    - YNAB is faithfully being recording and reconciled and we are being much much more careful about the spends, but its a low month income wise and it is creaking
    - screen time is still excessive but probably sleeping more and definitely drinking less alcohol
    - no new work clothes..have looked at the email alerts and deleted them..

    Hope everyone is OK xx

Thanks DIA. So am I! Relieved too. It's a big ask (risk?) with disruption to family dynamics. But so far so good.

Relaxing here at our fave local hotel bolthole. Lovely walk in the sun across the Mendips. Upgrade to our room, free breakfasts AND a free bottle of wine with our dinner as reward for previous brand loyalty. All looking good then on the front. It's for OH's birthday and we have put money on YNAB aside so planned spends.

    Over and out

Thanks beanie. They are very good to us here. Must give the staff the appropriate praise on Trip Adviser.

OH in gym so I have read papers, drunk all the free coffee I can and now on here.

Have updated sig..which pains me. But I need to be honest (especially with you lovely folks!) and so have put in the amount as borrowed for the bill to THEM. Still not sure what it'll be, but have sent a message to the accountant saying I need an appointment so we can get a forecast and I can either sweat or breathe.

Great to have some uninterrupted conversations with OH over last 24hrs. One of them was about what we have spent money on recently even as income has dipped. They include:

    - new TV and XBox...latter partly for our new lodger
    - new bed, mattress and bedding for lodger
    - holiday in the sun
    - replanting of garden after chooks and weather trashed it
    - money for DD1 for prom, after exam results, new bike and money for clothes
    - DD2 classes and trips and tutoring (mainly in a subject she loves, a language which they no longer offer at school)
    - micro finance loan to a charity

And we had stopped having a lodger and both working full time.

And that's just a selection I am sure...

So..most of those I wouldn't change, but the ramifications are clear to see. And we need to budget even more carefully and/or earn more income. Clearly we are now starting on redressing the latter one..with OH's extra days and the hosting, but we need to keep on it. The MF date of 2021 seems unobtainable so I may start to look at how far we need to push that out, without completely losing the idea of beingMF ASAP which I love.

Will try and update against my targets every Friday.

    Laters folks xx

And in some good news, a large item went for £299 and no fees to pay so all upside. Customer very happy and so are we. I will update my sig as we have smashed our target. Not sure anything else will go - if it doesn't we can just declutter it..to try and hit another September target

Going to friends for dinner shortly..very sociable weekend so taking wine and eggs from the chooks which always get a warm welcome. We have loads so will also give some to other friends who are hosting us tomorrow..

Have also used TCB to book a train..yes folks I am braving a bus connection...let's see how it goes. We have also used TCB to take out a life insurance policy for the girls to share if anything goes pop for one of us in the next 20 years or so..makes the drafting of our wills easier, which will be confirmed next week. We should also get a £75 voucher so that can go towards Xmas costs. All good admin stuff to have completed even if it means bills to pay - and we got mates rates for the wills

We have also reconciled YNAB (OH) and girls had LO's for tea. I on the other hand had crisps and dips as a snack

I wish I knew SA..I wish I knew...think it's cos I am always trying to make huge inroads into the CC debt and also to build up the savings. And then have to row back when we overspend on groceries etc. Need to remember it's a marathon not a race and kids are expensive..

Just redeemed £6 from PC surveys. Should have been more but was screened out of one recently. Doesn't happen often but annoying all the same.

    Thanks DIA

I have also done some admin work on mortgage goals...I hereby give notice I am formally shifting our MF date out to 2022 (from 2021) and will change my sig accordingly. I will inform OH in a moment

This will mean that we can try and do some nice things with the kids and our extended family who live overseas over the next few years (a NZ wedding comes to mind for example) but that we will make OPs of £500 pm, starting from next month. Back in the day before I took on the debt again it was nearer £1k which just doesn't seem feasible now. I am going to set up the SO now before I can change my mind. I wont just do payments as and when but make it formal with a SO. It'll mean that we have to be cautious with all our other spends as we are paying down the CC debt as well for my upcoming tax bill, but I think its important to try and kick on with as much as possible.

We don't plan to move or extend the house...we already have plenty of space we think and we'd have even more if we decluttered. I have just decluttered some jewellery (some I have had since school ) so another 18 items for the CS/thrown where it was broken/not a full set (I am the queen of losing a single earring ) so the target for this month is definitely within reach
