The 'No More Buying DVDs Until I Have Watched the Ones I Already Own' Thread

The 'No More Buying DVDs Until I Have Watched the Ones I Already Own' Thread 15th Feb 10 at 2:43 PM
So first there was the 'No More Buying Toiletries' Thread in which people plegded not to buy any more toiletries until they had used up those which they already owned.

This set me (and others) thinking about other areas in which we had what came to be known as 'stashes' of things which laid unused. This resulted in the ''No More Buying Books Until I've Read the Ones I've Already Bought' Thread'. However, I knew there was another guilty secret awaiting me under my bed...

...DVDs! Oh yes, lots and lots of them. Beautiful films, films I have wanted to watch for ages (but never quite got round to it), films I bought when on special offer (who can resist a bargain?), but things, ultimately, that have not yet been used.

Hence the third challenge: no more buying any more DVDs until I have watched all the ones I own. I may lend from others (although this will slow me down in my ultimate aim of watching my own), swap and sell if I wish (although being MSE, would not like to pay more for an incoming DVD than I paid for an outgoing one), and sell or dispose of otherwise (charity shop, other charity, give to friends etc. as desired), but I do not want the number of DVDs I own to increase until I have watched them all, and then (maybe) have disposed of some I don't like/know I will never watch again etc.

Who is with me on this one?!
(I'll let you know how many I've got when I've got time to count: I'm due in work soon!)

Watched Vanity Fair over the weekend. Really enjoyed it but I think it's a 1 watch sort of film so it will be heading to the CS. I also watched the 1st 10 minutes of The Waterboy but didn't enjoy it at all so that's going too.
I have bought a few new films recently though - oops. Hopefully they won't take too long to rattle through

Hi toast, sorry I sort of fell of the wagon with this one.
Finally managed to give 90% of the video collection away, which was a huge achievement.
Lots of DVDs we decided were one watchers have been donated to the local CS.
Currently watching some comedy ones, slowly working our way through them.

We did watch the imitation game over the weekend someone had lent it to Dh, so that can be returned now.

Very impressed with your sorting Mrs-Moneypenny. It's been a while since I've had a proper clear out.
I have been trying to only watch ones I own tho there have been a few extras bought. I think I'm doing quite well on getting rid of the ones I've watched and being honest about which ones I'm likely to watch again.
I watched I now pronounce you Vince and Ralph last night, which was mildly entertaining but definitely a 1 watch.

Watched the newer version of point break over the weekend -it was ok, someone lent us it so it can be returned.
Last night watched 20mins of 'the good the bad and the weird' it is a bad Kung fu film with subtitles spoken in Korean - it was very strange, now in the CS bag.
Watched prime rom com with uma Thurman and merely Streep it was ok but a one watch, also in CS bag now.

We watched shooter over the weekend, it was quite good so think Dh wants to keep it.

We did go through the shelves of DVDs and quite a few have been relegated to the CS bag.

Stood about 15mins of Elvis has left the building - it's now in CS bag. Watched 'the reader'-Kate winslet 'the witch finder'-vin diesel 'the contender'- us political drama,
Watched about 25 mins of eat pray love - it just wasn't doing anything for either of us so that's in the CS bag.

Watched a war film yesterday that will go to work for one of DHs friends 'age of heroes' it was a good watch with lots of action (Sean bean)
Watched 'inglorious b@%^*€d$' last night, didn't enjoy it so glad Dh said he's happy for it to go as well.
Going to watch the lovely bones tonight, I read the book which was good but creepy so think the film will be a one watch.

You are rattling through your films Mrs-Moneypenny - very impressive!

I liked Lovely Bones - I liked how visual it was and I thought they filmed the difficult plot lines well.

We've watched half of The Greatest Game Ever Played and enjoyed it so far - will finish it this week.

You are right toast, I did enjoy the film and it was well done. Some of th story was missed out that was in the book so felt some bits didn't make sense. For example there was no mention of the mums affair with the policeman who took charge of the case. And the middle ground before heaven allowing those taken too early or traumatically to come to terms with what had happened wasn't really fullying clear, in the book there was a big conversation in that area between some of the victims where they diescussed the perfect murder weapon to extract revenge on their killers and it was decided the icicle would be ideal as it dissolved away without a trace making both fingerprints and weapon disappear as it melted. Without the discussion the end of the film didn't have the same impact.
Now I've watched it I won't watch it again so it's going to be passed on.

Half term is over now and Dh is back at work so I think the speed we are watching will slow down again.

Glad you are enjoying the greatest game, I liked that as well.

Bag of 20 DVDs went to work with me at lunchtime, I left them in the staff room with a note telling colleagues to help them selves as what is left on Friday will go to the local CS. Dh took 3 to work with him for friends and I've saved one for my mum.

Backfromtheedge sometimes you just have to concede something is just not for you and let it go. Better that than wasting night after night watching something you don't enjoy. Dd3 and her partner loved it so someone will be happy to buy it from the CS. You've done a good turn.

Nipped in the staffroom and there were no DVDs left at all so happy that all 20 have found new homes.

Ds1 is gaming tonight and Dh is dozing so I'm going to read a book
