Lidl do accept Credit Cards in Wales and Scotland but in England they don't. - I'm not sure about Ireland.

    They don't in Porthmadog.

Yeah but to be fair they've only recently introduced telephones to Porthmadog.

The fact that most discount supermarkets don't allow the use of credit cards... am I missing something or isn't this really common knowledge?

It's reasonable to expect the big 4, and similarly big shops to accept credit cards, but anywhere else, isn't it common sense check the signs on the window before you enter.

No, I was totally surprised. I had maybe expected that I might have to spend a minimum amount (£5, £10 etc) before I could use my credit card, but did not expect that it would not be accepted at all.
I realise the cc companies charge the supermarket so am not offended by their policy, just surprised.

Well they don't take credit cards at the Lidl in Aberdeen so the theory they take them in Scotland is not quite correct.

Debit cards charge the shop about 10-20p per transaction [fixed sum irrespective of spend], whereas they charge from 1.5% to 3% of the spend on the card on cc purchases.

So thats why they typically don't take the ccs but do take the debit cards.
