The nights are getting so much colder. I am resisting putting the heating on but I know I need to get the thicker duvet out from under the stairs :(

Right so, I was good again today :A I worked from home, so I used what was in the fridge already and my husband is working late so I also had a simple dinner. Am a bit low on things to take in for lunch tomorrow so I'll have to buy it, but I'll aim for a soup or something quite cheap, plus I have a few snacky things sorted.

I received a supermarket offer in my email (to one of the nice supermarkets ) where if I spend over £100 per shop for the next two shops I'll receive a £40 gift voucher, which I figure will be handy for Christmas or other future supermarket shops.

It came to £109 and should last quite some time — I bought a mix of tinned food, organic meats, beer for the husband and household things we were running low on (laundry stuff, cleaning products), looaaaads, but hardly any fresh veg or fruit. I'll instead buy these down the road at my local Turkish grocery store as and when we need them, which should definitely come to less than the £20ish allocated per week! At least, I hope so...:rotfl: I shouldn't need to buy anything from the shop for at leeeast a month (and I have 2 months to use the offer), so I can stretch it out a bit.

Instead of buying our friend's a gift for their housewarming, I'm going to bake some banana bread and give them a bottle of wine we had leftover from the wedding + a card. Saves a few more pounds there, and they are quite frugal themselves so they won't be too offended like maybe some other friends might be!

So that's it! So far my £70 weekly spend has gone untouched since I topped up on Sunday, I'm very happy.

Well done on saving on supermarket shop and also on saving money for the housewarming. Sometimes I feel i learn slowly but every little change is so empowering. Just think you are now pounds closer to a newer stress free life.

  • very true savingwannabe, it is empowering!

I didn't have to pay for work dinner last night, which was fab as I thought it would end up costing around £50! So that means I'm still on track and not dipping into the credit card.

But still 16 days till payday, anything could happen! Got to stay focused.

Can't wait to see my savings pots go up, feels like I've been at £500 EF forever!

  • Another no spend day, woohoo! Tomorrow will most likely only be a small spend for a friend's birthday present then a few fresh bits I need to pick up to go with dinner that comes out of the joint account. I have loads in the freezer and I think I'm doing pretty well on the grocery budget so far! If things start getting tight it'll be tuna pasta for quite a few meals as I have 6 big tins in the pantry! :D

The weekend will be a fairly quiet one with friend's birthday dinner at her house (we can bring a bottle of wine since we have so much in store!), plus maybe a little day trip out of london.

I've been reading a lot of the MFW boards lately and finding them so inspiring! We haven't even bought a place but I'd really like us to be overpaying as much as possible so we can enjoy our later 40s mortgage free, it's definitely something to aspire to. OH and I earn decent money so there's no reason why we can't do it if our circumstances are similar (although I'm sure there could be a kid or two to throw us a curveball).

Anyhoo, the weekend soon, I really can't wait! 15 days till payday too..halfway there!

  • Sunday laziness, how I love thee..

    Things done today:
    - updated my phone network bundle, £4 off what I'm currently paying per month and more data (so I'll be paying £17 a month)
    - bought more of mum's birthday present, still have to buy a wee bit more to complete the package
    - worked out exactly what savings KS (my OH) and I have for our house deposit. we're a bit more behind than we thought, but with the wedding out the way and some sacrificing on both our behalves, we should be in a very good place by March 2017. The aim is for £65k by then (but this includes around £10k gift from a family member in the next few months) and doesn't include the H2B bonus we'll get if we spend under the threshold.

I've been doing okay with the supermarket spends but not sure if we'll last with just £74 for topups for 2.5 weeks! We have household basics covered for ages but this amount is supposed to cover things like beer, too! Just doesn't seem realistic. Slashing our average grocery spend from £260 to £200 might be a bit ambitious. Oh well, we'll see where we're at in a week or so.

Tomorrow should be an NSD providing I get myself sorted today. I should probably get out of my robe then!

  • I didn't leave the office all day, which always depletes my energy completely. At least it was a no spend day today.

It feels like so long ago since my emergency fund was added to, but I've finally hit the 60% mark, so I've updated my signature. Just 11 days till payday and I can make a bigger dent on the CC — 1.98% is shocking!

  • Not so disciplined today. I didn't go overboard with an expensive lunch but did have a snack and bottled water this afternoon, which I don't tend to normally do.

I'm not really enjoying my work lately. I haven't been there very long and when I joined I saw a lot of potential but now I'm seeing what a slow, painful place it is to be. I am getting paid well and grateful to have a job, so I will definitely stick it out at least until we get our mortgage sorted..gotta just keep thinking about the money!

10 days till payday, not long now..looking forward to updating my signature!

  • NSD today and I didn't even realise it, brilliant! I was so tempted to be lazy and buy takeaway tonight but resisted..yesterday work paid for lunch, so that was another bonus.

KS is going away for work next week so that relieves a bit of pressure on the grocery budget, but I am not doing so well on the personal entertainment spends with OH's birthday dinner tomorrow and a lunch on Sunday. Oh well, peaks and troughs, I suppose.

£200 for H2B goes out tomorrow leaving me very little till payday. At least it's only 8 days to go!

I think you should enjoy birthday dinner and congratulate yourself on your H2B payment!

    Well done.

  • Thanks savingswannabe! I actually ended up spending quite a bit more than I thought I would on the birthday dinner but it was a really nice evening so I'll just have to get on with it.

The good news is I have £34 left to last till October 4 on grocery spends..KS is away for a bit this week and then we are away at the weekend to see family, plus we have food in the freezer, so we'll definitely be okay! That means I've stuck to £200 for grocery spends this month, well under what I have been doing over the past 6 months.

Looking forward to payday in 4 days where I can make a bigger dent in that credit card and add to the savings account!
