Need a photo frame for a map?

Hello we purchased a. I've map that we want to now get a photo frame from, the map is 60cm x 43cm and would like to get a white wood, thick if possible but understand they are more pricey so can be thinner but white.

We have seen a2 size but that's 59.4cm x 44cm so we would have to cut it down, has anyone ever got a frame made somewhere or know what frame I would exactly need as seem to jump from a2 which is slightly smaller to a a1 which is far too big.

Thanks

I've had quite a few frames made - If it is worth framing, then it is worth paying for a decent one. For large prints, the frame should be 150-200mm larger and an over-mat cut to distance it from the glass.

It isn't cheap though... If you want cheap, just get a clip-together frame from somewhere like Ikea and don't expect it to last more than a couple of years.

What would happen to the frame after a couple of years? I agree that you get what you pay for, but a cheap frame could last as long as the most expensive.

Ikea has a few larger frames. RIBBA and VIRSERUM both come in 50 x 70cm, would that be acceptable? They do come with mounts (opening of 39 x 49cm) but if that would be too small, I don't think it would be too difficult to make your own mount or maybe go without.

There are plenty of specialist picture framers around - I would expect most larger towns to have one. They can make up frames of any size, within reason.

But having a frame made-to-order is a lot more expensive than buying a ready-made one. Expect tens of pounds, depending on the style and size.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

That a2 frame would do, your only going to lose 0.3cm at either side, (does map have a border), and have 0.5cm of an edge, never be noticed.

If you tried to cut a sliver off each edge you would mess it up.

If the a2 frame is in a shop where you can get your hands on it then cut a piece of card or paper to the size of your map and go compare.

    thanks
  • Yes, a made-to-order frame would be more expensive. But not crazy expensive (it depends which frame you choose). Get a local framer to give you a quote. As a previous poster said, if it's worth framing, it's worth doing right.

    Advantages -
    - they look much better
    - you get to choose from a huge range of frames
    - the frame will be the right size for the map
    - it will look better if there is mount board framing the image, rather than having the image going right up to the edge.
    - the framer won't damage the map in the process - it's extremely easy to accidentally put a crease onto an image while trying to frame it.

Don't decide you can't afford it until you know how much it will cost.

In my experience the glue holding corners together degrades and the sides then move. What follows in time is that either the frame then pulls away from being absolutely square or it won't hang straight. Or the broken corner allows movement within the frame and the picture drops or becomes skewiff.
