    Slightly odd one that only seems to happen when I'm cooking meals with mince. It's getting a very unpleasant taste that makes it inedible - sort of a soap metallic taste. It's something in the sauce, not the mince itself. I've even bought a new frying pan in case that was the problem.
    Tonight I've narrowed it down to either the tinned tomatoes or the red lentils. However I use different brands of tomatoes which doesn't seem to make a difference, and I've replaced the lentils with a fresh lot to no avail.
    Any ideas what it could be, before I can never have spag Bol, chilli or cottage pie ever again?
    I'm tending more towards the lentils but I've used them before without a problem so I'm not sure what's changed.

    Try using a wooden spoon - and try not overcooking the tomatoes.

    It's probably the tinned tomatoes - have you thought about buying the cartons to see if that helps.

    Chance'd be a fine thing.
    I always use a wooden spoon, and I smelled the change tonight as soon as I added the tomatoes and lentils, so it's not overcooking.

    There are a few medical conditions that can cause a metallic smell or taste. Does everyone taste and smell the metallic the same as yourself? If not maybe you should see the Dr?
    Hope you get to the cause.

    Since you've narrowed it down to 2 ingredients, try leaving the lentils out of the next one. You'll soon know which of the 2 is the culprit.

    There was a thing a few years back about pine nuts causing metallic tastes in some people for a few days at a time. You've not had any of those recently have you?

    Are you on any meds? A lot of tablets can alter taste. I had plenty of anti Ds do that as well as antibiotics

    Try adding a teaspoon of sugar to the pot.

    Not without cooking another load and potentially ruining it, which seems a bit wasteful. And leaves me without my tea. Will have a play with smaller quantities at some point.

    Could you try adding passata so you can rule out the canned element.
    Worth getting another opinion though as all sorts affects your taste from sinus infections on.
    Also if you are adding dried herbs have they gone off?

    What kind of sauce pan are you using and if it's non stick is the lining wearing away? Next thing I'm wondering how you wash up - are you using the same liquid or tablets if it's a machine and are you rinsing like normal!

    I'm fascinated about why this is happening! Though I appreciate a metallic tasting meal isn't good.



    Some sleeping pills leave you with a metallic taste, you're not taking them are you?

    Yes, I used to be OK with coriander actually but now can't stand it. It can ruin an entire meal for me if fresh leaves have been added, dried is OK in small amounts.

    Agree with sinus issues causing funny flavours too - used to get chronic infections before surgery and the manky taste would be a big clue an infection was brewing!

    I'm fine with some amount of it, fresh or dried, leaves or seed, once it gets past a certain point the food tastes of soap or washing up liquid...ick
