If it is just small amounts as mentioned then the use of the likes of HSBC and making the transfer via their online banking is usually cost effective. Flat fee of £4.0

Title: recent improvements
As someone that moves relatively small amounts of money involving non-major currencies a few times a year I can report that there is a new set of operators.
Previously I've used my own and other people's banks (expensive and slow) and then more recently PayPal (had to go GBP -> USD -> DestinationCurrency plus charges along the way) and last time around Xendpay which was a revelation. Or, to put it another way, this was how it should have been.
I've seen very few mentions of this in general but have helpfully been pointed here (holiday money was the other forex discussion possibility and that isn't what this is about for me).
My understanding is that companies like Xendpay who as their main business xfer large amounts in multiple currencies actually get their efficiency by summing all the trades over a day or few days and then exchanging the difference. Makes perfect sense to me when it is a few hundred pounds one way or another with a family member who isn't Euro or USD.
For those with an interest they also have a charitable bent and sometimes offer no-fee xfers if you donate what would have been the fee to charity.
I don't see why people would use another service (like the really expensive cash to cash) *unless* (I'm thinking aloud)
no bank at the other end
badly illiquid currency
something else
Anyway, I am aware I'm sounding like an advert but Xendpay (they must have competitors) have made me and people I know think again about how often and how much we xfer because the costs taken by banks or PayPal used to mean it was a bad idea to do it as needed.
Ho hum
I'm sure there must be other people around doing the same thing now but0 -

never heard of Xendpay, what sort of reputable business relies on donations ?
I use currencyfair.com and there are several other well-established forex companies who enable movement of any sum, tiny or huge, for minimal effort and cost. With my example it is 3 Euros to do a transfer. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -

Since you and I know about this (Xendpay and similar) and other recalcitrants don't I'm going to say my bit to them and !!!!!! off. That'll show who is advertising and who isn't.0 -

Xendpay and RationalFX are the same org, if you can't be bothered to look up the financial standing that is your problem
Hint RationalFX may be bigger than your bank in FX
Also: I've just had a look at currencyfair.com and they are more than twice the price fee-wise and offered a lower rate.0 -

if these newer means of international payment are well known why is there no obvious link to them?
Answer me that.
You insult me and others by saying I am an advert for contemporary international payments vs old fashioned expensive ones if you can get your head around that! I advocate any well understood system that is afordable and allows legal transmission between known currencies without going through hoops. Perhaps you simply don't understand and are, in effect, just saying that.
Truth will prevail regarding currency exchange just like everything else on MSE, you just seem to be at the back0 -

*my* competitors ? what kind of idiot are you. if you were open minded about currency transfers you wouldn't be taking the attitude you are.
I really don't get this.
surely it is you that is trying to maintain some sort of old school expensive currency xfer which begs the question why are you doing that?
I happened across Xendpay, I used them, they offered me market rates and the option of a very reasonable fee.
Perhaps you are like the partner of a relative of mine who, once they figured out they weren't doing things the best way had a minor fit aka realising they were wrong0
