any guinea pig money saving tips?

Any one have some tips to keep my 2 Guinea Pigs amused and exercised in this rubbish weather? They live in a large hutch outside at the moment. Normally they would go out in their run in the daytime, but it's too wet to put them out. They do get cuddles, but there's only so much they'll put up with.
hey're not really into toys, unless it involves food, and they can't use hamster type wheels or balls (GPs are just not built for them!).0 -
large cardboard tubes, or clean unused large plastic pipes from B and Q, sand down the edges though to smooth them. You can hide food, make tunnels etc.
get the inside of a loo roll and hide favorite treats or veggies inside then stuff some hay in either end so they have to work for it.
Do you have a small animal treat ball? You put treats in and they roll it about to get the treats?0 -
Our beloved Hamish the hamster has died. The kids are missing him now that hes gone, so we wondered about another pet. I'm thinking guinea pigs....but I have small kids- 14 months, 4 years and 6 years. Are they a suitable pet for youngsters? These little fellows would be kept indoors mostly so I was worried about how smelly they are. Any advice would be gratefully received- thank you.July Win: Nokia 58000

Personally, I think they stink and there is no way I would have them indoors. AND.. you may get used to the nasty smell... so wont smell it in the end... but visitors will and they'll go away thinking you're minging :rotfl:0

Guinea Pigs don't smell as long as you clean them out often enough. They do tend to wee quite a lot, so that's one thing to bear in mind! I know some people have managed to litter train them like rabbits but ours have never co-operated on that score. My only concern would be that very small children may not be very gentle in handling them, but as long as they're always supervised I'm sure that guinea pigs would make great pets. We have 2 piggies, and they are sweet little characters.

Males smell stronger than females.
But there is no reason why two females can't be kept in the house so long as you clean them out throughly once a week and lift out wet bedding daily.
If you teach the kids that guinea pigs are petting pets, not cuddling pets you should be fine. They get scared when picked up, so should only be done so by an adult.
Also, they are noisy, so would you mind squeaks and squeals and pipping when you are trying to relax at night?
However, they are very good pets for youngsters if you give consideration into training your pets and you kids.0 -
Guineas are lovely but very nervous creatures so I don't think they will suit littl 'uns. My guineas don't like being picked up so often and need gentle handling so they may not be suitable for little children. They don't smell that much - same as hamsters - sort of musty straw wee smell. What about goldfish - no don't roll your eyes and think easy cop out!! A different breed for each child to watch and monitor i.e shibunkin, black moa and simple goldie?Dirty Cash- DEBT BATTLER:mad:0

Thank you for such fast replies!I think you have helped me make the decision - not to get some just yet. My kids are used to cuddling dogs so perhaps they will be too rough with little chaps!
Dirty cash- I do have an old fish tank in the garage! So that may be a good idea after all!July Win: Nokia 58000 -

My eldest little one LOVES her Golfish.. she enjoys feeding them and watching them and fish tanks are lovely and relaxing to watch.0 -
Thanks for those ideas, I'll give them a go. They do have a treat ball, but not really sure what would go in it? I tried just the nuggets they have, but they didn't seem all that interested.0
