Laptop is SUPER slow

This has suddenly happened. Everything was fine until Thursday evening when everything my laptop did/does is super slow. Loading up, shutting down, opening or closing anything. Even typing this post up the text is appearing on the screen far later than the moment I press the keys. When clicking on the start menu icon, the menu only pops up about 10 seconds later.
An advert from Avira slowly appearing in the bottom right corner of the screen is slow.
The laptop is windows 8.1 and I've had it for 3 years. I have no idea what has gone wrong. Please help!

Have you had any messages about the laptop running out of hard disk space? If not, DavidP24's List of Things to Do is a good place to start...
  • Davidp, I am confused at this bit:
So to start by pressing Window Key + R to display run, type in MSCONFIG and enter, it will ask you to enter the Admin password if you are on a standard account (this will be the password of the admin account you created earlier). Initially deselect all of them, then click Apply and OK, then reboot.

What do I deselect? Do you have a picture I could copy from? I am full of cold and not functioning properly. I think that is how I have got into this mess in the first place - not having my wits.
John Gray - I haven't had any messages pop up. I switch my computer on, went on the intetnet and noticed how slow it was. So I tried other programs that had nothing to do with the internet and found the entire computer was slow. Only my mouse/cursor seems to be normal.

Just been looking at a similar problem on a fairly high spec Dell laptop. Turned out the hard drive is failing - it fails Dell's diagnostic routines and as it is still under an extended Dell business warranty, they are the next port of call.
Meanwhile the owner has managed to backup his data to an external drive.

It is never what you tell us but what you do not!!

    SSD to speed it up

If it was running fine then all of a sudden started running slowly then its got nothing to do with the fact it isn't running a SSD. I understand SSDs might be new to you and you think they're the second coming of Christ since you got one but when there's a problem there's a problem and sticking a SSD in isn't going to change that and if there is a fault say causing the CPU to overheat so it throttles itself or malware pegging CPU usage to 100% a SSD won't fix that.

No kidding, the laptop is functioning normally now. I downloaded the latest version of malware bytes, restarted the laptop as malware bytes said and when I come back on the computer was back to normal. Uh?????????????????? It's been super slow since Thursday.
Why has the laptop suddenly functioning as normal?
I will still be doing DavidP's suggestions.
  • I'm currently on the standard account (previously the admin account). I have AdwCleaner which found 6 threats. Ran it again and found nothing. I have run Malware Bytes and TDSS Killer which found nothing.
I have yet to run Revo Uninstaller as I don't know how to use it. I'm looking at it and thinking uh?

Do you think the laptop is clean and safe to use?

if MBAM is telling you to reboot the puter, it's because it found stuff and needed to restart the machine to complete the cleaning....check the logfile in it's history, I bet it found stuff. Same with ADWCleaner, needs to reboot the pc to fully clean :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
