I have a new Android phone - running 6.1 (Marshmallow) - I am trying to use Gmail for my e-mail and cannot see how to REFRESH / CHECK FOR NEW EMAILS ....
I can find the setting for changing the period between auto refreshes - from 15 mins to 1 hour - but no way of doing a manual refresh..
Also how do I close ALL open apps - Android 5 had a button that closed ALL.......

"Pull" the screen down when you are already at the top of your mail list
That will refresh the view and display any new mails0 -

It would depend on your phone, the option should still be there. BUT, the general rule of thumb is to let android deal with the open apps. Closing them generally is just making the phone work harder.
I have noticed my S7 actually even keeps them open after a restart.0 -
Try the left hand button .
But as above no need to close .0 -
Don't close apps let android deal with it.
2nd Are you using the GMail app or a generic email app? If you are using the gmail app you shouldn't need to refresh it, it is push email so when an email is sent to you it will just receive it.
But as said by AndyPix you can force a refresh by pulling down on the screen.“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0
