What to do with Stairs

Looking for some advice what to do with the wooden stairs in the entrance to our Victorian Maisonette. We are the upstairs flat so we have an entrance hall area which goes straight into stairs up to a landing/main part of our flat.

We have put some nice patterned tiles in the entrance hall downstairs and are installing wooden flooring on the landing upstairs. Our problem is what to do with the Stairs in between...

We removed the carpet that was covering them and had planned to expose/refurbish the bare wood. this has however raised a few issues namely that the original stairs are in really poor condition particularity on the edging and are very thin/worn so the noise and smells coming through from the downstairs flat has increased a lot.

We were thinking about carpeting the stairs again but we are worried it will look weird to from Tiles>Carpet>Wood, does anyone have experience with this? We also thought about getting the new wooden floors from the landing extended down the stairs but this seems to be really expensive given the cost of the individual stair nosings!! There are kits to do it on Ebay but then It would not match with the wood upstairs...

Any other ideas would be appreciated, we are happy to go with something quite modern as long as it seals it up well!

you could tile the risers with the same as the entrance and then do ceramic treads

but carpet is probably safer and quieter.

google images and pinterest has loads of ideas

    some interesting ones here

  • Thanks for that, we were trying to avoid a runner as it wont solve the problems of the ugly edges between the stair and the skirting board. Thought about tiling it as well but its then the question of what to put on top of each step. Thanks anyway I think carpet may be the safest option!!

those were runners but the idea was to focus on the concept of something with interest/contrast to the existing coverings at the top and bottom, it would then be out of full width carpet.

or you could do something cheaper full width to hide/seal the problems then overlay with a nice runner.

Visually you see more going up, you need to think about the walls and ceiling for down

I quite likes the idea of the grass look alike.

you could then theme the walls with plants up to a sky scene on the ceiling

Some ideas that spring to mind:

1.You could put the same wood/laminate you're using on the landing onto the stair risers (hiding them) and carpet only the treads in a color to compliment the tiles and/or wood. Something neutral, or even crazy/daring.

    2. You could ask to have the carpet from the stairs made into an additional runner to put on the landing, so although you have wooden flooring upstairs there is still a runner/matching rug to bring it together and match the stair carpet.

    3. Carpet the landing too? :)
  • Great ideas thanks!
