Could consider Getting a Friends and Family Railcard, then can be done for £35.55 when booked via East Coast Trains website.

Get 10% off a F&F railcard here. Down to £24.40.

So total for two, inc railcard = £59.95.
And of course the railcard can be used for future trips.

    TPE advance fares from Doncaster-Stockport.
Fares start at £5.50 each way.
Stockport-Chester £10.30 Off Peak Day Return via Altrincham.

So a return for £21.30 instead of £40.10.

These fares are available from www.eastcoast.co.uk

For a nice walk on fare saving (tickets bought on the day of travel) then split at Stockport.

Doncaster to Chester Off Peak Return £40.10

Doncaster to Stockport Off Peak Return £16.80
Stockport to Chester via Altrincham Anytime Return £13.10
    Total return £29.90

Just Make sure that your train goes via and stops at Stockport, Bigger savings can be had by buying in advance and getting Advance singles to Doncaster to Stockport.

Edit: late again, Lol, but difference between my fare; Stockport to Chester than pmm1981's is that it's valid for a month hence why it's slightly dearer, all depends on how long you want to stay in Chester for.

    Hi Rawr,
You don't specify times or whether you are returning, so I have listed a few options.

If you want to travel with Virgin, the quickest option, there is little left in the way of Advance Purchase tickets.
Travelling with London Midland is considerably cheaper, but there is a change at Crewe on all trains.

    VIRGIN
    SINGLES:
Cheapest advance single is on the 20:48 from Liverpool - £34.50 (1st class)
    Nex cheapest is 16:18, 16:48, 18:48 and 19:48, at £46 (1st class)
Most of the day the cheapest advance single is £55 (Standard) or £59 (1st)

Compare this with the on the day £69 Off Peak Single.

    RETURNS:
If you are returning, an Off Peak Return is £70 (buy on the day) - it may be possible to combine one of the above Advance tickets with another to better that, however.

    LONDON MIDLAND
    SINGLE
Buy a Super Off Peak Single on the day for £24.40, valid on any London Midland service to London Euston (valid all day at weekends, heavily restricted on weekdays).

    RETURN
Returns start from £25.50 (buy on the day), different restrictions apply depending when you come back - please reply for more info.

EDIT: I should add that the above advance fares were checked and were available at 08:00 on 03/02/11

    Hope this helps,
    Crunchy.

Thank you for the help on this. For this particular route, I was after one way, as I had managed to book a return cheap through megatrain. Think I paid £36 in the end, from warrington to london. Though your way looks much cheaper.

I do now however, have to find some more trains. I have searched through, but I am really not very good at this. I need to do a return to London, for 2 adults 1 child (The second adult is 16, so I assume he will be an adult fare)

I want to take them away for half term, so off peak is fine. They are off 12th feb till the 20th feb. So anytime between then, though would like about 4 days in London ideally, though a few extra days would not be a problem. Megatrain is not pulling any up for me.

Ideally, between Liverpool/runcorn and London, but of an afternoon/evening able to travel to Manchester or warrington.

I know that i am being a pain with all the details, but I do really hope that you can help me. And it i so so much appreciated.
