Capquest suddenly chasing me for a 7 year old debt

7 years ago, I defaulted on a my Next store account by £325. I was living at home at the time, and my mother kicked me out so I ended up moving.
I haven't heard from anyone regarding this money, then today a letter from Capquest turns up. A default for this debt fell off my file 14 months ago now. I haven't contacted capquest or anyone in relation to this debt.
Is the debt still enforceable? Will paying it at this stage effect my credit score? There is no mention of this debt on my credit file as it fell off like I say.
Hoping to apply for a mortgage next year.

Hi shopaholicno1
The overwhelming likelihood is that this debt is now "statute barred", which would make it unenforceable through a court. If Capquest cannot sue you for it, there is no way of its having any fresh effect on your credit file, even if you chose to pay it. It should therefore have no bearing whatsoever on your plans to seek a mortgage in 2018.
See our guide to time limits - this includes a link to a letter template you can use to tell Capquest that you believe the debt is now statute barred:

I have now paid it off, as it sits better with me doing so. Great to know it won't impact on my credit file.0 -

It was statute barred, it would not of shown on your credit file again anyway, and sending the letter in the link above would of saved you £325.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. You should feel good about that - not many people would pay if they thought they could get out of it.Aiming to make £7,500 online in 20220 -
