Citroen Berlingo 1.6hdi garage repair issues

Citroen Berlingo 1.6 HDi went in for suspected EGR fault in February at local French car specialists, although not main dealer. Engine running erratic, lack of power with white smoke coming from exhaust.
Mechanics contacted me to say replaced EGR but not cured, will have to investigate further. Possible timing issues. Turns out that a valve spring had broken and would have to be replaced but head would need to come off. I asked what the likely cost would be for all this and was told about 1500 - 2000 pounds. The whole set of valve springs would need replacing as well as a new cam belt kit etc. Mostly labour.

Car returned to me a week later after a hefty bill of £1984 payed on credit card. Drove it home and the engine was still running lumpy. As late in evening, called AA who noticed a loose turbo pipe. Tightened up and seemed better.

Two days later car was running lumpy yet again and white smoke from exhaust. Took it back to garage who diagnosed faulty EGR valve and replaced at no cost. Took it on a longer run a few days later and the engine was still misfiring , as if timing was out. Towed back to garage yet again and left with them.
Mechanic said one of injectors was not working properly, although these were fine before I gave it to them. Fixed under warranty and all seemed fine. However, I was now getting a fowl exhaust fumes smell from under bonnet, so returned it yet again. They tightened the injector and all seemed fine.
Saturday 17th March took it for a run on motorway upto Bristol and still got a slight lag on acceleration.

I've come to the end of my tether with it all now. I payed nearly £2000 for this job and despite numerous attempts to repair it the garage have failed to sort it.

Have I now got grounds to request a full or partial refund for the work undertaken under the Consumer rights act 2015, supply of service?

Thoughts please :(

    Broken valve spring ?
How did they get it started ?

I think they are pulling your leg somewhat .
The symptoms sound far more like the phenomenon know as black death that infests the 1.6 HDI engine causing oil to feed past the turbo when the oil ways block up with soot.

So, you think I ought to demand my money back or go through my credit card?

I doubt you will get anything back if you agreed the work.

I would get the engine checked for soot in oil ways and if it has whats known as the black death, write it off.
It strikes about 120k or much less if the oil changes have been skipped, but the symptoms you describe are what to expect, oils escaping past turbo bearings causing white smoke, blocked breathers leading to smell in cab and loss of power.

Really? This is despite them saying it was the valve spring causing this when it clearly wasn't. I think I've been mislead here.

Those are pigs of engines - notorious for problems with DPF, EGR valves and turbos.

If you've EGR valve trouble, and continuing problems, i'd say its the turbo....

Sadly this 1.6hdi engine is famous for it. The white smoke from the oil in the turbo could be the kiss of death.

Is this worth replacing the turbo or just write it off, considering I've payed £2000 for nothing?

Think they certainly had you with the valve spring, it didnt fix it did it.
On this set up a broken valve spring would drop the locking collars and valve to fully open, it would have locked the engine and not started .

As others say as well, carbon build up in the oil is far more likely.
You could swap the turbo and get rid, it will last 1500 or so miles before the bearing seals fail.

It seems that way. They even showed me the broken spring when I went to collect the car after fixing it. I guess they never even took the head off then either?

It will be of no consolation but these engines are known for combination problems, so you "think" you've diagnosed a problem, resolve it, for it to have been that but for other problems / the same symptoms still be there.

Some years ago when i was motor trading we bought a Ford Focus 1.6TDCI from a main dealer with a view to reselling it. It was a bit mileagy but a smart enough looking car in black and the only "fault" being down a bit on power and smokey and an engine management light on.

Diagnosed as the DPF, so we spent something like £700 sorting that out.

Still down on power, so we fitted a new EGR valve at several hundred pounds.

Still down on power, took it to Ford who diagnosed it as being a Turbo fault. £1500 for a new Ford turbo fitted BUT they wouldnt stand over the work unless we got some other oil way "upgrade" fitted at £400 as it was a known problem.

We spent something like £3,200 on that car before it was running right...

We'd another beautiful Peugeot 307 XSi 1.6HDI with low miles, FPSH and had been a trade in to a main Peugeot dealer - similar problems with EGR valve and DPF. Cost us well over £1,500 to get running right. Peugeot just wanted to keep replacing bits until the problem went away.

I would rather !!!! on my hands and clap than have a 1.6HDI engined car about me.
