If you are 60+, or on certain benefits dont forget heating grants

Its just a reminder that if you are 60+ or on certain benefits dont forget heating/insulation grants. You can get up to £2,700 towards insulation and heating. It doesnt quite stretch to a full heating system, but if you are like me and old boiler (joke) well actually if you have a boiler over 8 years you may get help if you are on certain benefits or over 60. Fuel is rocketing all the time, now is the time to consider doing this for later this year as it can take up to 6 months to get this grant, think of the savings in fuel alone?

In Feb we got our old boiler removed an replaced with a new boiler, Vallance we got told one of the best boilers today by inspector.

Poppycat, not quite accurate. You say: "if you are 60+ OR on certain benefits" but the quotes you give make it clear that it really applies to those who're over 60 AND on certain benefits.

We were considering replacing the boiler this year as our yearly project, but because we're not on any means-tested benefits we don't get anything, except a voucher for £200 from the local authority (and winter fuel payment). In fact, our 75-year old roof is taking precedence - it needs replacing more urgently than the boiler, so the roof is our big project for this year.

Someone told me that there might be local authority grants available for replacing an asbestos-tiled roof, so I enquired of the local authority. The answer is no. The cost is going to be around £4K - if we were on means-tested benefits the LA could grant us up to £8K but they would have to come round and assess the need, they would only consider it if the roof was actually leaking. We think it won't stand another winter's gales and frost, while it's not actually leaking as yet, many of the tiles are cracked, others are slipping, and we'd prefer to get it done BEFORE it starts leaking, maybe in the middle of winter, have to find a contractor then...the mind boggles. Anyway the short answer is, even if you're 60+, unless you're on means-tested benefit i.e.pension credit, there are no grants for any of these type of things.

They are available to people under 60yrs, its only criteria 1 that applies to over 60's, criteris 2 and 3 apply to anyone who meet sthem.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Sorry but that isnt the case, you dont have to be 60 and on certain benefits. I am not 60 and on WFTC and CTC. I was mealy stating that either 60+ or on other benefits not 60 and or benefits.

I thought my heading and rules were self explantory.

PS Hope you get your roof fixed soon
  • I have looked on the website for Scotland but it appears that the central heating grant applies only to people aged over 60.

I desperately need a new central heating system and I do have my disabled Mother who lives with me - she is 65 and is registered as disabled but it's my house and registered in my name.

Any ideas if there is a way I could apply for it in my own right, being a full-time carer for my Mother and disabled child? If it's not applicable through EAGA does anyone know of any other organisation who might be able to help?

    Many thanks

Did you ring them up pinkpauline34 regarding this. I dont see any difference in the rules between England and Scotland.

I no you can get gtanst under 60 as I got one and I am not 60 I also have a friend in her late 40's who was told that she could have £2,700 for a full heating system but she would have to pay any excess which she claim she cant afford.

I would recommend any who fits that criteria to certain make enquires, even if boiler isnt packed in, if its 8 years + old it might be worth changing as a new boiler would be more efficent and cheaper to run.
  • I called EAGA today and as the property is owned by me and not my Mother, we are not eligible. I got in touch with the Scottish Executive to ask why this Scheme applies in England and not Scotland and they tell me that because my Mother doesn't own our home, we are not eligible.

Pretty annoyed to be honest as she needs the heat on constantly because of her medical condition and our boiler is on its' last legs. Any ideas on anywhere else that might help us?
