Paying a bill by Bank Giro Credit in branch

I have a credit card bill to pay, I usually do it by online transfer, but this time I have some cash to put towards it. The CC statement has a Bank Gire Credit slip at the bottom of it. I remember years ago, you could just go into a branch and pay over the counter with a cheque/cash. Can I still do that without charge these days? Bearing in mind that the CC bill isn't related to my bank that my current account is with, and I won't be paying using my account either.

If they do now charge for doing it this way, I guess I'll be better off paying in the cash to my current account and then paying the bill from there.

Is there not some instruction on the form (possibly on the back) that tells you this?

Where I work, all bills, and non in house credit cards or loans, have to be paid via your account, and you can't pay using cash.

We pay the cash in and then send the money using the internet banking details on the back of the bill.

This is so there is a audit trail of the transfer.

If you want to pay cash I think you could use the post office if they accept giro slips for non post office accounts.

Why not put the cash in the account and pay it all via online transfer?
Don't BGC credits take longer to get there?

You are ok paying with cash as long as the bank you are using is the one that you hold your account with. They will want proof that you bank with them so make sure that you have your debit card with you.

Alternatively, and as already mentioned, just pay the cash into your account and pay the bill online. It will get there quicker.

As long as it's an old style clearing bank, you bank there and you have the paper slip then no issue.

That said, Halifax can process BGC payments for it's customers (like BoS/ Lloyds branches) but doesn't really advertise it.

The OP will need to use the BGC from an original statement (received by post). The BGC slips on online PDF statements, printed at home, are not accepted IIRC.

No this is incorrect, you must pay cash into the account for bills that are not Halifax branded.

This is a change of procedure, and its so there is an audit trail of cash, and to limit the opportunity to pay in counterfeit notes, (of which there are a lot around currently). If cash is used to pay into a non branch account there is no way of reversing the transaction and this leads to a write of to branch.

Branches may pay BGC by cash, but this is not the procedure so wouldn't suggest here that it is possible, as you say its not advertised as it not something that is encouraged.

That said I don't think we know which bank the OP banks with but as they have used faster payments before, paying in the cash is the option suggested.
