It'll be fine to freeze today as it's still in date and vacuum packed.

If you'd bought it YS today you'd have frozen it wouldn't you?

The date will be a use by date. It is up to you. Some people choose to ignore a use by date, some people stick by them.

I stick by them and wouldn't use it.

Well, put it this way. If it were on its sell by date with a yellow sticker I'd not think twice about buying it and putting it in the freezer. Things do not go off just because of an arbitrary date especially if they've been kept in a fridge.

No wonder there's so much food thrown away.

Yes really, :D I didn't say I throw food away. I just buy what I am going to use and ensure that I use it in good time. :D

There is generally a lot of confusion regarding the meaning of dates. People say "I tend to stick to dates on meat and fish, but ignore it on cakes and biscuits"

Yes, that is the difference between use by and best before :D

I can never remember seeing a sell by date on anything. If there was I imagine it would be on Valentines day cards, Easter Eggs, Mothers Day cards etc.

But you were suggesting to the OP that you wouldn't use the meat she has (had).
If she'd followed that advice, she'd have thrown it away.
My last comment about food being thrown away was generic.
    There really is a lot.
10 million tonnes a year according to this:

But as someone who posted on another thread:

And of course, I do the same with cheese. :o
I'm possibly not the best person to take advice from if you really do take notice of 'use by' dates. :rotfl:

I really can't see the confusion.
'Use by' and 'Best before' seem pretty clear to me.
I've never seen a 'Sell by' date on anything either.

But that would have been up to the OP, she asked for advice, that was mine. :D I wonder what she did with it?

Fair enough. I haven't read the link but I am sure it is correct.

I didn't mean I was confused by the terms. (There isn't any tone of voice in type) I meant that you read and hear it all the while. They are clear to me as well.

The grapes in my fridge are best before 10th December opened today and the tomatoes best before 3rd December still perfectly fine.

4 yogurts use by 23rd December and they will be :D

We clearly see 'use by' dates differently.
I have a big tub of yogurt dated 8/12, as yet unopened.
I'll have one third for lunch tomorrow, same on Wednesday, same on Thursday.
OMG! It's out of date.
Same as the tub I finished today - that was dated late November.
