savings in bank . i am on ESA

Options
hi
i have had savings of exactly £11.236. for approx 1-2 years in bank now, i am on ESA and DLA mid rate for life due to my illness. im a single man 48 year old with life threatening disease.

i am saving for my daughter , £5000 ive kept in a credit union and the other 5-6 odds was in another 2 banks.

i got letter from ESA to say i had this money and they want my bank accounts , but surely they allready have my bank accounts if they know how much i have ?

what can happen to me: can i be prosecuted ? will i be taken off and my money stopped ?

really worried now. thanks in advance

They have probably had a data match via HMRC regarding intertest paid and need to verify it.

Presumably the letter was from either ESA it self or a compliance officer?

Are you on contribution based or income related ESA?

hi tom and thanks, i dont even know what im on it certainly is not work based ESA

i am on it for life, require no sick lines, i have serious illness.

will they stop my money / ESA i recently bought a car for 5000 pounds so now i have around 5000 left in all my banks together at this time.

im worried , i thought i could save my DLA...i do not have a clue about all this ESA stuff and about how much mony im allowed i am daft at this kind of stuff and innocent of any wrong doing intentionally.

If you're on incoime based ESA you need to tell the DWP as soon as possible the entirety of all your savings and recent large spends.. You cannot hide the savings any longer and if you try it will definitely come back to haunt you.

If you're unsure of the strict rules surrounding the income based ESA you put your signature to you need face to face specialist advice.as soon as possible.

DWP will not have your bank account details and rely heavily on HMRC data matching to uncover large amounts of money the claimant should have declared - but didn't want to - while on income based benefits.

It's highly unlikely you'll be prosecuted and will be fined at worst.

    Your income and savings

Your income may affect your income-related or contribution-based ESA. Income can include:
    • you and your partner’s income
    • savings over £6,000
    • pension income
You won’t qualify for income-related ESA if you have savings over £16,000.
Your DLA is no problem - it is not savings dependant...
