I got the letter out of the blue last week, upgrading me to Premier. A little weird as I'm currently living off savings and have had a zero income for the last 3 months, and have never earned close to their requirements.

I'll be making use of that English Heritage membership though!

    How strange.

Do you cycle through money your account to other accounts to get the 'offers' like the £5 Halifax reward? If so, they may think you have a higher income. I think this was the reason HSBC upgraded me to advanced, because I have to pay in £1750 a month to be an Advanced customer, but my income wasn't always above that (I'm freelance, so it varies).

Does it give you instructions on how to remain a Premier customer? eg. minimum income to your account?

If you guys got a letter regarding the automatic of the upgrade, scan the letter for us to see. :)

    Also, blank out personal info.

I requested a chequebook on my bog standard account (balance = £1, I only use it for the Blue Rewards each month) and a big Premier chequebook has arrived. It's really unusual: quite big, lots of random code letters at the top of each cheque, and 'For and on Behalf of Mr XXX' near the signature part.

annual income paid into the a/c £75,000
or £100,000 in barclays investment products

    Deposit cash,
    deposit cheque,
obtain cash (not essential but sometimes convenient),
hand in an R85 (not going to happen again).
Those are the reasons I've visited a branch in the last several years.
Depositing cash is the one that needs a branch of some kind.
All these transactions can be done at Post Office branches if you bank with the big four banks, and it is rare for a bank branch to close where a PO branch isn't nearby.

For personal accounts, maybe. For some club/society accounts, no.
Even for personal accounts, still needs a branch, and takes longer.

Plus, just imagine if all the banks closed all their branches - what would the Post Office charge for paying in then?

It depends very much on the arrangements between the bank & PO.
    Some allow business transactions.

I hope that the PO would charge them through the nose

I understood Barclays checked each account (with computers) to prevent cycling cash through and being marked as suitable.

ie, if you cycle through from the Barclays account to another, say £10k a month, the system will know!

Your salary must be paid in and stay in for a set time, I believe, someone will tell me if I'm wrong.

i have a Barclays Premier account, and find the service to be very good, along with similar from HSBC
the key i would be establishing is whether they are expecting you to pay for the 'upgrade'
